Non-working IFilter installed automatically by Windows Update? #196

At some point an installation on our laptop stopped being able to index
Office files; it was reporting lots of 'Unspecified COM errors' in the
indexer logs. On further investigation it seems that a new version of the
MsOffice IFilter (offfilt.dll) had been installed - version 2006.0.5730.0 -
and this had somehow broken the IFilter system. Oddly, using the Microsoft
IFilter test tools (filtdump.exe and filtreg.exe, available from the
Platform SDK, and ifilttst.exe, available from the Windows 2003 Resource
Kit) no problem was evident. I eventually fixed this by re-registering the
original DLL - version 2003.5.28.0 - with regsvr32.
