Call graph visualization

After spending some time with this codebase, I decided to run pycallgraph on it. and this is what I got (also attached):

I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

Isolation between the core and gui could be a lot better
For that matter, horizontal isolation could be better
Maybe some modules could be mostly replaced with the standard library? (eg logging, jsonconfig)
The are probably a few important functions for performance, if we did a lot more profiling (and if performance was a problem)

However, I don't see any of these as priorities to address and with no concrete proposals or direction for action here I'll close the issue.
