fix errors on signup page #1529

closes #1528 I have worked what I can and left it as a comment in signup.tsx, but I don't know how to override the error message and replace it with a different dialog.

This branch has changes from the handle-network-errors branch, but isn't pushing to that. Let's get rid of this branch and make a new one for the actual changes for this issue.
