Well, a little history I guess is in order. The project has been around since 1998. Over that time, it has been moved around a bunch, from the old svn repository to google code, finally to here on github. The last version was released in 2011 and is available on https://pingus.seul.org. As for the development, I haven't seen any news from Grumbel (the creator) directly since it was moved to github in 2015, but as recently as a year ago he was merging in levels from other creators, so he might be able to comment on this thread directly.
The linux development build should work fine as long as you have all the dependencies installed, but the windows build was always hard for me to get working, and the last time I got it working was back using visual studio 2008.
Honestly, I would love to see this project get finished. There are a lot of playable levels, the framework for the story, and the world map is there, and the level editor works great. Not to mention that the game is just plain fun to play.
The project has been around since 1998, so now (2018) is the birthday, time to celebrate and release new stable version 0.7.7 or 0.8, @Grumbel and @gabrielrota , what you think?
Is a good idea. What's the plan? I don't have much time for this but with yours help we'll can try.

Not sure, but did you know there's https://github.com/SimonN/LixD ?
I managed to build 5b38d5 on Macos Monterrey and play for longer than I should have. I'm not sure if I have time to take on a project or not, but this sure is fun.
Looks like there's been lots of activity, might there be a release soon?
I am not sure what are the intentions of the current maintainer with Pingus since features required by modern Linux distributions like the AppStream metadata are getting removed. Also, there was no new tag since 2011.
The game was also recently removed from Flathub, the Flatpak software distribution platform, by the maintainer.
Apparently, Pingus Has Not Been Updated For Years (I Cannot Even Play The Development Versions) . What Do You Think?
