Dead project? #259

Open hardwareadictos opened 3 years ago

It's been nearly a year without any update.

App still has some issues, like being unable to display all album photos on the app...

Is there any news about it? Is the Piwigo-Android project dead?

Thanks in advance, hope i'm wrong as i'm a big fan of piwigo project :(

Catfriend1 commented 3 years ago

At least, there were recent commits this year and maybe authors are just too busy (corona, work, homeoffice?) at the moment... I don't know but building from source worked well for me. My piwigo works pretty good except I sometimes hit a minor bug which isn't urgent.

Mh ... this is a good question.

But no, the project isn't dead and @Catfriend1 is not so bad with his judgment, there are so many important and interesting things to work on. I would like to be (again) much more active on this, but recently I did not take so many pictures and so my personal pressure on this was a little released. As many free software projects this is purely done in non-paid free time and sometime motivation is gone. Initially I hoped, that releasing some early stage would attract some more people to support as doing this app alone is not too much fun. Even very small PRs will remind me about this project, so feel free to help and push me, then we might see a new release some day

Thanks a lot for the answer, I was worried about project continuity on Android as I've been following the project since years and phone implementation could be an awesome self hosting backup! Glad to have news ๐Ÿ˜Š

Please, count with me if you need a tester ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ

@ramack can we do another beta build or another release? I would be willing to help in this process any way I can.

ploum commented 3 years ago

Is the piwigo.com bringing enough revenues to be stable on the long term? You say that Piwigo is purely non-paid free time. Do you mind sharing numbers and how may subscriptions you should sell to afford working on Piwigo full-time?

(as someone who is looking to pay for good open source services, I find transparency really helpful in those kind of project)

plegall commented 3 years ago

@ploum very honored to see you here, meaning you probably use Piwigo. I've met you in a conference (a long time ago) and listen to your crypto currencies podcast...

For now, a big part of the Piwigo Android app has been done by volunteers (meaning "non paid"). In 2019, Pigolabs (the editor of Piwigo.com) has paid an intern (@voriondev) to work on the Android app and the result was that we were able to release version 1.0.0 (and 1.0.1 + 1.0.2). Unfortunately @ramack doesn't have much time to work on the app, so Pigolabs just recruited @remi-martin to work on the Android app. He started last week. He's reviewing the current state of the app and his first goal is to list what needs to be done to release 1.1.0. It will fix some bugs and bring new features already implemented by @ramack

This year 2021 will bring a lot of improvements on the Android app. No pressure @remi-martin ;-)

Hi @plegall, nice to see you :-)

Iโ€™m currently not using Piwigo but Iโ€™m looking for an alternative to Google Photo for my family. Also, Iโ€ฏdonโ€™t want to host it myself. Currently, the major feature Iโ€™m missing is autoupload newly taken pictures.

Thanks for your answer. It seems clear that development is ongoing and this is a really nice thing to see :-)

plegall commented 3 years ago

Currently, the major feature Iโ€™m missing is autoupload newly taken pictures.

And this one is not in the immediate roadmap (much work to do before that). Even the iOS app, which is much more mature, does not have it.

We have the "autoupload" request quite often though. I think we have to seriously think about it :-)

hardwareadictos commented 3 years ago

Hey Team :)

Is it posiblel to release a new beta with the code updated? Piwigo app on Play Store is quite outdated. Just to report bugs and help fixing stuff.

Thanks in advance

ramack commented 3 years ago

yes, we have @remi-martin in the team now and he is working on it!

Stay tuned!

soloam commented 3 years ago

I would gladly pay for the app, if that would help the project
