Magic Lantern (http://www.magiclantern.fm) provides cool features to DSLRs, and its open source, they have source code (https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern). So I guess you can borrow some features from them. Like: -Zebras for under/over exposed areas. -Focus peaking for quickly checking focus. -Trap focus. -Follow focus. -Rack focus.

And maybe also an option to zoom when using manual focusing, so it's easier to focus.
