Trait Name Maximum electron transport rate
Proposed Synonyms ETRmax
Definition ETR refers to the rate of transport of electrons between photosystems I and II, and it is considered a close approximation of photosynthetic rates. The maximum ETR, or ETRmax, refers to maximum rate at saturating light intensities.
Trait Class Physiological
Measurement Method Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM)
Measurement Type Unit
Measurement Unit mmol electrons m-2 s-1

the method to measure ETR is based on the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) technique. It basically consists on emitting blue light pulse (over a leaf area of about 1cm2) which will cause chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF); such ChlF information is used to estimate the quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Y II) and subsequently ETR as a proxy of photosynthesis.

The ETR data is collected every 15min during the day and every 2 hours during the evening, and we normally acquire such data in 50-100 plants in a time window of 2-4 weeks.
