pollen tube (PO:0006345) currently has no is_a parent

Current definition: A tubular cell extension formed by the germinating pollen grain; carries the male gametes into the ovule. [ISBN:0471245208, Esau]

Suggest making pollen tube is_a microgametophytic cell (new term), develops from tube cell (new term)

Proposed definitions:

'''microgametophytic cell''' (PO:0025027): A plant cell that is part of a male gametophyte. is_a plant cell, part_of male gametophyte (PO:0020091).

Do we want this term? Might not be appropriate for cells in microgametophytes of non-seed plants.

Children would include tube cell, generative cell, and vegetative cell.

'''tube cell''': A microgametophytic cell that is part of a pollen grain that develops into a pollen tube. is_a microgametophytic cell (PO:0025027).

We had a limited discussion of this item at the POC conference call on 10-26-10. Decided the term microgametophytic cell would not work well outside seed plants, and will delete it. Will need to have more discussion of pollen cell later.

Suggest making pollen tube is_a plant cell, develops_from vegetative cell (already have part_of microgametophyte)

Suggested def: A plant cell that is part of a microgametophyte, develops from a vegetative cell and forms a tubular extension of the pollen grain.

Comment: carries the male gametes to into or near the ovule. May be branched in gymnosperms. See GO:xxxxxx for pollen tube tip. (tracker for pollen tube tip: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3115812&group\_id=76834&atid=835555)

Also suggest we add tube cell as an exact synonym to vegetative cell (PO:0020099) and rewording definition of vegetative cell to include non-angiosperms

Current def. of vegetative cell: The larger cell of the male gametophyte of angiosperms that does not divide further. Suggested def. of vegetative cell: The larger cell of the male gametophyte in seed plants that does not divide further and develops into the pollen tube.

we agreed to call this term 'pollen tube cell' which is is_a plant cell. develops_from pollen/microgametophyte

You are right. The term I was describing in my most recent comment should be called pollen tube cell.

We can also submit the term pollen tube to GO as a cellular extension. Since the current term ((PO:0006345) describes just the tubular extension, we should obsolete it, suggest it in GO, and add a new term pollen tube cell.

At the POC meeting on 12-15-10, we agreed to obsolete PO:0006345 pollen tube. New term pollen tube cell was created. Definition: A plant cell that develops from a vegetative cell and forms a tubular extension of the pollen grain. Comment: carries the male gametes to into or near the ovule. May be branched in gymnosperms. See GO:xxxxxx (waiting for number) for pollen tube and GO:xxxxxx (waiting for number) for pollen tube tip.

We will add tube cell as a related synonym to vegetative cell (PO:0020099).

Also reworded definition of vegetative cell to include non-angiosperms. New def. of vegetative cell: A plant cell that is the larger cell of a male gametophyte in seed plants. It does not divide further and develops into a pollen tube cell.

Currently PO:0020091 : microgametophyte has a part_of child PO:0025121 : pollen sperm cell. Should we add pollen tube cell PO:0025195 as another part_of child of PO:0020091?

Not yet. We need to go through the various ways gymnosperm microgametophytes have been described, then establish a system, and determine synonyms. Otherwise tube cell will be confusing and will require changes.

pollen tube cell (PO:0025195): A native plant cell (PO:0025606) that develops from a vegetative cell (PO:0020099) and forms a tubular extension of the pollen (PO:0025281).

Comment: Carries the male gametes (PO:0025006) into or near the plant ovule (PO:0020003). May be branched in gymnosperms. See GO for pollen tube (GO:0090406) or pollen tube tip (GO:0090404).

Propose revised name and def'n: microgametophyte vegetative cell (PO:0020099): A native plant cell (PO:0025606) that is the larger cell of a microgametophyte (PO:0025280) in seed plants. It does not divide further and develops into a pollen tube cell (PO:0025195).
