portion of plant substance #206

At the POC meeting on 11-5-2010, we discussed adding a new root term "plant body substance" (if we add plant anatomical entity, it could be a child of that term). I suggest the name "portion of plant substance" instead, as that is consistent with our naming of tissues, and also with CARO:0000004 portion of organismic substance, and the term "plant body" is not in widely used.

Proposed definition: A portion of organism substance that is or was part of a plant.

Ref.: portion of organism substance (CARO:0000004): Material anatomical entity in a gaseous, liquid, semisolid or solid state; produced by anatomical structures or derived from inhaled and ingested substances that have been modified by anatomical structures as they pass through the body.

This would be parent to terms like latex, xylem sap, phloem sap, resin, mucilage, oil, cuticle, cutin, sporopollenin. I suggest we add the parent term now and wait to populate it, as this is not a priority for this release.

I think this is a good name for the parent term and is more consistent.

At the POC meeting on 12-1-10, this term was accepted with the name portion of plant substance. Def: A portion of organism substance (CARO:0000004) that is or was part of a plant.

xref.: portion of organism substance (CARO:0000004): Material anatomical entity in a gaseous, liquid, semisolid or solid state; produced by anatomical structures or derived from inhaled and ingested substances that have been modified by anatomical structures as they pass through the body.

I am closing this item.
