moss capsule #257

Open planteome-user opened 13 years ago

planteome-user commented 13 years ago

At the POC meeting on 12-15-10, we added new terms moss capsule valve and moss capsule columella. I am adding the new term moss capsule so we can create the correct part of relations.

I used the name moss capsule, to differentiate it from capsular fruits.

Proposed def: A sporangium in mosses.

We can work on the final definition when we work on adding non-angiosperm terms for the next round of revisions.

Agree. we need to define sporangium in this context, we have only microsporangium in POC.

In the future we will need to define also operculum (the lid covering the mouth of most moss capsules), annulus (a zone of variously differentiated cells between the capsule urn and operculum, facilitating opening of the capsule), peristome (a circular structure, generally divided into 2n (i.e., 4, 8, l6, 32, or 64) teeth, arranged in a single or double (rarely multiple) row around the mouth of a capsule) and urn (spore bearing portion of a capsule) which are part of the moss capsule.

definitions from Bryological glossary-Tropicos

Caspule or sporangium is the terminal spore-producing part of the sporophyte; in most mosses it is differentiated into an apical operculum, central urn (spore-bearing region) and a sterile basal neck or hypophysis (a strongly differentiated, sterile neck at the base of the capsule, between seta and urn)

spore: a reproductive unit produced in the capsule as a result of meiosis; usually minute, mostly spherical and generally unicellular bodies that give rise on germination to a protonemata (a filamentous, globose or thalloid structure resulting from spore germination and including all stages of development up to the production of one or more gametophores)

Suggest renaming this spore capsule. Need to make sure definition fits all plants that have spore capsules (including all bryophytes).

At the POC meeting on 3-8-11, we agreed that moss capsule (PO:0025232) should be merged into sporangium (PO:0025094). Spore capsule will be added as an exact synonym.

I am closing this item.

This term was added as an exact synonym of sporangium, See that tracker:https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3132600&group\_id=76834&atid=835555.

In hindsight, it might be better to make a child of sporangium, since the spore capsule in moss is so different than a sporangium in angiosperms.

Will leave open for consideration.
