FF.00 fruit size 10% and sibling terms #377

Open planteome-user opened 13 years ago

planteome-user commented 13 years ago

There are currently five stages based on size of final fruit, starting at 10%, etc. There is not any term for very early stage and 10% is already pretty far along from a developmental biology view. Since there seem to be no annotations for any of these stages, suggest instead of introducing new terms to change the definitions a tad. So for FF.00 fruit size 10%, define as up to 10% final size. For the case of the FF.00 fruit size term, the related term for maize would be 6.1 dilatory.

proposed def'n.: (based on Mary's suggestion): A fruit formation stage that begins with the formation of a fruit and ends when the fruit has reached 10% of its final size. Comment: This stage can only be used when the final size of the fruit is known.

At the POC meeting on 9-11-11, we agreed that these stages could be up to and including the % size for now. Should rename terms "fruit size up to 10%", etc.

RW: When does formation of a fruit occur? Should we say fertilization of an ovary instead?

new proposed: FF.00 fruit size up to 10% (PO:0007032): A fruit formation stage that begins with fertilization of an ovary and ends when the fruit has reached 10% of its final size.

Comment: A fruit development stage may begin without fertilization in cases of parthenocarpy, apomixis, or other hormone-induced conditions.

Example name and definition for sibling terms:

FF.01 fruit size 11 to 30% stage (PO:0007009): A fruit formation stage that spans the interval when a fruit has reached 11% to 30% of its final size. Comment: This term can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known.

New definitions, from POC meeting on 9-20-11:

FF.00 fruit size up to 10% stage: A fruit formation stage that begins with the formation of a zygote and ends when the fruit has reached 10% of its final size. Comment: This fruit development stage may begin without fertilization or formation of a zygote in cases of parthenocarpy, apomixis, or other hormone-induced conditions. This term can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known.

FF.01 fruit size 10 to 30% stage: A fruit formation stage that spans the interval when a fruit has reached 10% to 30% of its final size. Comment: This term can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known.

Re-opening this item. Also see separate tracker for the parent term 5 fruit formation stage (PO:0007042): https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3565057&group\_id=76834&atid=835555.

At the POC meeting on 9-4-12, we agreed to rename these terms to make it clearer that they are whole plant development stages, not stages in the development of individual fruits. We also agreed to modify the definitions slightly, for the same reason.

New proposed names and definitions:

whole plant fruit formation stage up to 10% (PO:0007032): A whole plant fruit formation stage (PO:0007042) that begins with the formation of the first plant zygote (PO:0000423) of a growing season and ends when the average size of fruits (PO:0009001) on a whole plant (PO:0000003) has reached 10% of final size. comment: This stage may begin without fertilization or formation of a plant zygote in cases of parthenocarpy, apomixis, or other hormone-induced conditions. This terms is best used for plant with more or less synchronous fruit development and can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known. This stage occurs only once in the life of annual plants, but may occur once for each growing season in perennial plants.

whole plant fruit formation stage 30 to 50% (PO:0007029): A whole plant fruit formation stage (PO:0007042) that spans the interval when the average size of fruits (PO:0009001) on a whole plant (PO:0000003) has reached 30% to 50% of its final size. comment: This terms is best used for plant with more or less synchronous fruit development and can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known. This stage occurs only once in the life of annual plants, but may occur once for each growing season in perennial plants.

whole plant fruit formation stage 50 to 70% (PO:0007007): A whole plant fruit formation stage (PO:0007042) that spans the interval when the average size of fruits (PO:0009001) on a whole plant (PO:0000003) has reached 50% to 70% of its final size. comment: This terms is best used for plant with more or less synchronous fruit development and can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known. This stage occurs only once in the life of annual plants, but may occur once for each growing season in perennial plants.

whole plant fruit formation stage 70% to final size (PO:0007027): A whole plant fruit formation stage (PO:0007042) that spans the interval when the average size of fruits (PO:0009001) on a whole plant (PO:0000003) has reached 70% of its final size to its final size. comment: This terms is best used for plant with more or less synchronous fruit development and can only be used of the final size of the fruit is known. This stage occurs only once in the life of annual plants, but may occur once for each growing season in perennial plants.

We also have a request to add new synonyms to these terms for grape plants:

Add related synonym: BBCH principle growth stage 77; Berries beginning to touch Add related synonym: grape E-L stage: 31 Berries pea-sized (7mm dia), bunches hang, (BBCH 75) Add related synonym: grape E-L stage: 32 Beginning of bunch closure, berries touching (if bunches are tight), Berries beginning to touch (BBCH 77) Add related synonym: grape E-L stage: 33 Berries still hard and green, Majority of berries touching, (BBCH 79)

Need to clarify which stage matches each synonym.
