seed dormant stage #424

It appears we are lacking a term to describe the period during which seeds are dormant. We can utilize the revised GO term for seed dormancy process.

proposed definition:

seed dormant stage (PO:000xxxx): A sporophyte vegetative development stage that occurs during the interval between the first division of the zygote and onset of the seed germination stage (PO:0007057), during which a seed participates in a seed dormancy process. [source:GO:0010162].

See Go tracker: [https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3462990&group\_id=36855&atid=440764 GO SF Tracker]

At the POC meeting on 10-18-11, we decided that seed should be a subtype of plant structure, rather than whole plant). See SF tracker: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3458354&group\_id=76834&atid=835555.

Seed development stage (PO:0001170) is a subtype of plant structure development stage. I suggest that seed dormant stage be a subtype of seed development stage instead of sporophyte development stage. Also, I would not say that seed dormancy begins with the first division of the zygote, because there is often still a lot of growth and physiological activity of a seed for some time after the zygote divides.

New proposed definition, seed dormant stage: A seed development stage during which a seed participated in a seed dormancy process (GO:0010162).

Comment: A seed dormancy process (GO:0010162) is a dormancy process in which dormancy (sometimes called a dormant state) is induced, maintained or broken in a seed. Seed dormancy is a suspension of most physiological activity and growth in a seed, including the embryo contained therein, that can be reactivated. It often requires special conditions for reactivation, such as specific temperature, scarification, or leaching of inhibitors. Not all seeds enter a seed dormant stage.

At the POC meeting on 1-3-12, we agreed to add a term for seed dormant stage.

def: A seed development stage during which a seed participates in a seed dormancy process.

comment: A seed dormancy process (GO:0010162) is a dormancy process in which dormancy (sometimes called a dormant state) is induced, maintained or broken in a seed. Seed dormancy is a suspension of most physiological activity and growth in a seed, including the embryo contained therein, that can be reactivated. It often requires special conditions for reactivation, such as specific temperature, scarification, or leaching of inhibitors. Seed dormancy includes dormancy of the embryo and the seed coat, although these may not begin or end simultaneously. Not all seeds go through a seed dormant stage. Most seeds that go through a dormant stage do so only one time.

Also, add seed dormant stage has_part embryo dormant stage (once new term is added).

Adding this term and closing tracker, but leaving open to comments.
