It ends at what stage. At fully formed fruit (still green in most cases but of final size) or the ripening stages are also included in it?

We haven't developed any specific subtypes for this yet, so this is just a very general, place-holder definition. I think it would make the most sense to have this class cover the whole development of a fruit, from fertilization to ripening/drying.

This includes a fruit formation stage and a fruit ripening stage (see separate trackers). I will add a comment to make this clearer.

At the POC meeting on 10-9-12, we agreed to add this term.
fruit development stage (PO:0001002) def.: A plant structure development stage (PO:0009012) that has as primary participant a single fruit (PO:0009001). comment: Defined by characteristic morphological, structural, histological or other visible features of a fruit. Includes as subclasses fruit formation stage (PO:0025501) and fruit ripening stage (PO:0025502). May have as part a seed development stage (PO:0001170). This stage applies to an individual fruit. For development stages of a whole plant (PO:0000003) based on fruit development, use whole plant fruit development stage (PO:0025500) or its subclasses.

This term has been accepted and is available as revised in Release #20, I am leaving this tracker open as the sub-classes need further work.

Revised definition based on the creation of the new parent term: multi-tissue plant structure development stage (PO:0025571), see [plant-ontology-po-term-requests:#492].

We will refine this definition further as we work on the sub-stages, so I am leaving this open.

We need to add a comment on this term, and child terms, to also annotate to the specific fruit type when annotating data.
Fruit development stage (PO:0001002) was a subtype of collective plant structure development stage, but has moved to be direct subtype of plant structure development stage.
current def: Stages of development of a fruit defined by characteristic morphological, structural, histological or other visible features.
proposed def.: A plant structure development stage (PO:0009012) that has as primary participant a fruit (PO:0009001).
comment: Defined by characteristic morphological, structural, histological or other visible features. May have as part a seed development stage (PO:0001170).
