Replace the GUI toolbars, with new ones, which are more user-friendly. This would have a side bar, which can be minimized, that held the common options at the top: zoom, undo and redo.
Below are then sections that can expand and contract.
canvas controls (clear, grid, resize, scale)
palette / colour mixer
swatches / colours
tools
tools settings
I don't want to include both settings and tools in one pane, as they will take up a lot of visual space when expanded. By separating them out (and colours from the mixer), it allows user to only expand what they want to expand.
