Should this be incorporated into the new explainer document I just wrote?
I'd like to call it "The Podcasting 2.0 Namespace," because "new" will not be new at some point.
I don't won't to discard the Podcasting 2.0 Certified idea. It specifically describes a set of features. The term had been used consistently to describe this.
@theDanielJLewis I'd like to call it "The Podcast Namespace". That is an accurate description of it from a technical point of view - the tags look like podcast:tag
as well. I agree, it isn't called The New Podcast Namespace.
@adamc199 At the end of the day, it's your baby - but I do not know that that is supposed to mean.
I have no issue with the namespace and what it is called.
It falls under Podcasting 2.0 which is more than a podcast.
I wouldn't want to make this even more complicated, but I would like to introduce The (New) Podcast Namespace APIs. 😉 See #209
I've revised the suggestions, above, to take into account @adamc199 @benjaminbellamy and @theDanielJLewis 's views.
Small nuanced question -- will there be a conscious effort to define Podcasting 2.5 or 3.0, or rather cross that bridge when it arrives? Curious how the group is thinking about incremental updates and how to define/brand them. (I still think of the way we mark the major Apple updates in correlation with their iOS releases.)

From the perspective of the namespace, it's more of a Windows10/MacOS approach where the "Phase" numbers show the progress, but the overall moniker for Podcasting 2.0 doesn't change. That's how I've been operating mentally with it. Others may have different conceptions.
I guess if we ever have to bump the "2.0" we will need to change the name of the show. Which, might actually be kind of cool. :-)
We could track the namespace with version numbers, like 2.1, 2.2, and such.
However, it would technically all start at 1.0, since this is the first The Podcast Namespace version.

Or, if we want to start start from 2.0, we could argue that we consider the bundle of all legacy podcast-related namespaces (like Podlove, iTunes) as the 1.0s ;)
(revision 2)
Currently, "Podcast Index" and "Podcasting 2.0" are being used interchangeably, and it's quite hard to describe what's going on.
The names cause some confusion. I've heard some people claim that the podcast index namespace is for new tags for the podcast index (nope), some talk about the podcasting 2.0 namespace, and it seems it's all a bit of a mess.
I'd like to propose we make this a little easier for journalists and evangelists, with some clearer definitions. We have three things we're working on here; they're distinct and do different things.
The Podcast Index
This is the index. The set of APIs and the search function that is available at podcastIndex.org - available for podcasters to submit their shows to, and for app developers to use as a viable alternative to other proprietary indexes.
The Podcast Namespace
This is the work were doing on this GitHub repo. It's all about new tags for podcast RSS feeds, looking like
podcast:value
orpodcast:locked
. These are consumed by everyone - not just The Podcast Index. Podcast hosts should support them; podcast apps should use them. (This namespace also has accompanying APIs, which are the Podcast Namespace APIs).Podcasting 2.0
This is the overall idea - not just the podcast produced by Dave Jones and Adam Curry. It is used to describe the entire work - work that includes the Podcast Index and the Podcast Namespace.
Examples
✓ "I'm in The Podcast Index"
✓ "Our podcast hosting company supports the Podcast Namespace"
✓ "Our podcast hosting company supports Podcasting 2.0"
✘ "I support the Podcast Index Namespace" - the namespace is for all podcasts and for all indexes, not just The Podcast Index.
✘ "I can't get my head round the Podcast Index lock tag" - it isn't a tag that locks any part of the index. It's the Podcast Namespace lock tag. It's used by everyone.
✘ "I heard Dave and Adam on The Podcast Index podcast" - it's a podcast about Podcasting 2.0, not just about the index.
Summary
By resisting the use of "the podcast index namespace" or "podcasting 2.0 namespace" or things, I think we can make this project easier for others to understand, and in turn increase its takeup.
(Amendments: Podcasting 2.0 is wider than just the podcast (@adamc199); removal of the word "New" (@theDanielJLewis).
