We're at an inflection point where we can finally start to describe our strategy with examples built from real case studies. We're going from making promises about the future to doing show and tell to tie our current work to future vision.
Also, I just got feedback from a public interest tech class on making the front page of the website appeal to its target audience, tell them what we're doing, and tell them how to engage. We can do this all before the scroll.
Remaining work
[x] front page visual storytelling
[x] explore smaller body copy for design system, 28 → 24px?
[x] unify the front page around Data Help Desk service because the most tangible thing we do is help people answer questions in various contexts (images below)
ask a question about a jurisdiction
we tell you
who the relevant agencies are
which data you'll need from each of them
which data is catalogued in our db vs not found online
which options you have for collecting, parsing, and analyzing the data
about potential collaborators asking similar questions (geographic, subject matter)
eliminate language implying we do more than one thing—that's what we do.
[x] add Strategy
[x] add Volunteer
[x] move Jobs from top nav to footer
[x] tweak language
[x] Docs & Resources to Docs
[x] Data Sources to Data
[x] clarify on data sources app that these are links to content elsewhere.
[x] link to quick search page
[x] clarify what public records are (maybe say data instead)
[x] we're "organizing locally". use that verbiage and shorten a lot of the wordy explanation, especially on the about page.
[x] links in "what we've done so far" are too scary—we need to build bridges for people rather thank linking to a github deep cut or big airtable view.
the "national directory" link was good, and the off-ramps / assists to people who are confused were appreciated. include more of those.
