Thanks so much for the pull request. I like all of these changes! I was a bit iffy about calling update_state without the keyword arguments spelled out. Looking over the code again, I think since we do call it 3 times in different ways, you're right that it's obvious enough. I've merged your branch in to #17 and I'll be including the changes.
