The effective resolution for backscatter and extinction with using the same smoothing window diameter is different. Please see the discussion here (You might need to register a user account!). This effective resolution needs to be unified in order to calculate the profile of lidar ratio. However, this was usually omitted by lidar data researchers, due to multiple reasons. Therefore, this brings additional trouble to convert the results to EARLINET data format, which only accept one vertical_resolution (effective resolution) for both backscatter and extinction. Therefore, optional smoothing is required to dealing with the conversion of such results. In order to do this, one may need to further smooth the backscatter or extinction, depending on which effective resolution is coarser. In addition, one also needs to take care of updating the respective uncertainty results, in term of the further smoothing.
