Thanks for the report. It's working fine for me in 3.4 following your steps to reproduce.
A pink image texture is Blender's way of saying it can't find the file you're looking for, which makes me suspect something is wrong with the file path (e.g. the files were moved since creating the asset library).
Can you check the file path that the image is looking for and compare that to the actual file in explorer?
If you can't resolve the issue manually, then deleting your asset library folder, creating a new one and re-downloading the files should fix it.
yes, i checked the path, and they are correct and the files are properly downloaded.
now i noticed that in material view, the hdr shows in the background, whereas in rendered value it goes pink. Isnt that an indication that there is a link but that something is off on the render side?

If the path is correct and you can see the image in the image editor, then it sounds like something is wrong in Blender itself.
How about if you manually download an HDRI and set it up yourself, does it work then?
ok, so when i go into the shader tree and link the hdr manually, it works, but when i drag one from the asset browser it goes pink. I have thumbnails and it is obviously linked to the correct asset folder and they are all downloaded (dropbox). they are present locally. It s the dragging that stopped working. What can we intuit from this? thanks

OK that means Blender is working fine and there's an issue with the paths of the assets created by the add-on. Can you try deleting your asset library folder, creating a new one and re-downloading the files?
Yup worked thanks Greg!

Hey another question
is there any way to speed up the loading of thumbnails in the asset browser? They have all been generated and are present locally, I believe, but seems like every time i select a category it takes about 15 seconds to show the thumbnail. Feels almost like it is downloading

I've added some info to the troubleshooting guide about that: https://github.com/Poly-Haven/polyhavenassets/wiki/Troubleshooting#thumbnails-are-always-loading-slowly
In future please make separate issues about separate problems so it's easier for other people to find.
Hey Greg, thanks for the above info. I read through it and it seems strange to me, because all of my components are top of the shelf. I run a ThreadRipper 3970X with 64GB 3600mghz RAM and Samsung EVO 970.
Also, other asset browser collections show their thumbnails quickly without any wait.
So it seems to me like it's poly that has a problem.
Really want to sort this out

We do use a slightly uncommon image format (webp), I'll do some tests next week with PNG instead which will take significantly more hdd space but may load quicker.
On my PC it's more or less instant, so this is difficult to test.
sending you a video of what happens when i open polyhaven's lib

Can you try using PNGs instead of WEBP images and let me know if that helps? I started a separate issue here that explains how to do that: https://github.com/Poly-Haven/polyhavenassets/issues/35
cool i will try it out tonight

Describe the bug A clear and concise description of what the bug is.
the viewport just goes pink when i select an hdri from the polyhaven asset browser. I switch the world data block to a different hdr asset library, and it works. It's just polyhaven that doesnt work. The node tree in world shader looks fine. I am including a screenshot.
Console log Start blender from a command prompt/terminal (https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/launch/index.html), reproduce the issue and paste the entire console output here:

Expected behavior A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen.
i expect to see the hdri image, provided i am in material or rendered mode and Film tab in Render properties is unticked on "transparent "
