ある Table: add 標準語 negative informal of ある #16

Replace 未然形 + ない with ない

Pomax commented 7 years ago

It really is the 未然形 + ない, found still in use in loads of places in Japan outside the Tokyo regions, and still found vestigially as part of many contracted conjugations involving ある, so while I understand why you'd propose this correction, I'd rather keep the fact that ある is very special explicit.

That said, a correction like:

Contractions in the inflections are indicated with (c), standard Japanese indicated with (標準語).

inflection formality affirmative negative

present informal ない (標準語), 未然形 + ない
formal 連用形 + ます 連用形 + ません

would be fine.

thanks for the update - can you also update the line above the table then, to make it clear what the (標準語) indicator is for?

Pomax commented 7 years ago

... while I appreciate the desire for detail, this appendix is not the place to explain what standard Japanese is and how it came to be. That explanation should go in Chapter 1 if you feel the explanation there is lacking. This is just a lookup appendix, so we're purely using (標準語) as a key here, similar to (c), with brief explanation only.
