Potential fix for #332

This looks great @bonnielu! Works smoothly with the latest data files.

I've only noticed two minor issues so far: 1.rect elements drawn outside of the earliest/latest collection date range Screen Shot 2022-07-22 at 9 19 14 AM

Of the above two issues, (2) is resolved by @bonnielu and (1) is still being analyzed
