Decline of (insect) population #68

Open pbuttigieg opened 5 years ago

pbuttigieg commented 5 years ago

Hi @ramonawalls,

I'd like to add the following term cluster (can do in a PR)

Preferred term label

  1. population decline
  2. decline of insect populations
  3. human-induced decline of insect populations

Synonyms

  1. reduction of population size, decrease of population size, population reduction, population decrease
  2. As above, just with "insect" in the mix
  3. As with 2, but with humans in the mix

Textual definition

  1. A population process during which the number of individuals belonging to that population is reduced.
  2. A population decline during which the size of a population of insects is reduced.
  3. A decline of an insect population which has been caused by human activity.

Suggested parent term

population process (PCO_0000005) for 1., 1 for 2. , 2. for 3.

We'd also like to attribute a project (INTERNAS) but there's no stable identifier for that yet. Could this link be added as a placeholder: http://www.ufz.de/index.php?de=44296 ?

@pbuttigieg Please go ahead and make a pull request. I will merge and make a new release.

Since 1 is (I think) intended to apply specifically to a 'population of organisms' you should probably either reference that term specifically in the definition, or consider adding a logical axiom such as 'has participant' some 'population of organisms'.

Should we make a class for 'population of insects' to define numbers 2 and 3?

Fine with including the placeholder link for attribution. Please just let me know when there is a more permanent link so metadata can be updated.

I can see us getting into confusing situations about what is in ENVO vs PCO. Should deforestation or algal bloom be moved to PCO?

ramonawalls commented 5 years ago

@cmungall, I think a good solution is to have the processes live in Ecocore, the collections of organisms live in PCO, and the ecosystems and environmental features and materials live in ENVO. Does that make sense to you, @diatomsRcool and @pbuttigieg? If you all think a call to resolve this would be useful, let me know, and I will organize.

diatomsRcool commented 5 years ago

Sounds good to me. We need to commit this to paper.

I am going to make a class for insect population and leave the other terms for ECOCORE.
