Restock+ Wishlist #17

Open ChrisAdderley opened 6 years ago

ChrisAdderley commented 6 years ago

This is a fairly current list of things that we 'want' to do, but have not committed to doing.

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

What about the Pug?

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

I believe both PJ 'extra' engines are slated for inclusion, but don't really need scratch work so aren't on this list

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

I would like to add to the wishlist:

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

We have to be truly careful about scope here. I don't think that hemispherical tanks are "missing" in stock, which is really the purview of RS+. The +length tanks are better, but do need to be considered in the context of being a very large amount of texture work.

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

Regarding RCS, Mandatory RCS part pack has a full set of RCS nozzle configurations derived from stock parts. Please consider such configurations for RS+. Also, regarding small surface-attached parts which have "holes" in them (like RCS nozzles): have you ever experimented with making holes entirely via normal maps, so flushing a nozzle into surface would not produce visible clipping of surface inside the nozzle, but lighting would still behave as if the inside of the nozzle has internal volume?

blowfishpro commented 5 years ago

KSP's part highlight shader unfortunately makes techniques like that all too visible in-game

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

But that would only happen on mouseover.

blowfishpro commented 5 years ago

Yeah, but it’s still a concern as far as art design goes

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

Normal mapped nozzles just don't look very good. You need parallax or displacement mapping to even start to get into creating depth of that level.

It's very unlikely that we will add all of MandatoryRCS's content, but a shortlist would be useful. Looking to zero in on the 3 or 4 most useful configurations of block.

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

*dusts off cherished chart... rcs_concepts

I'm a big fan of 45° box configuration, especially with block depicted in the middle, for its elegance and symmetry. Also, single longitudinal nozzle (leftmost column, second from the top) helps greatly in complementing RCS on the new Mk1-3 pod. Also, complementary small RCS set is ideal for satellites and 1.25m ships (and even some small 2.5m ones) because size and thrust of stock RCS is usually a huge overkill for them. But I bet that a hypothetical poll on the forum may yield different priorities.

TykoTek commented 5 years ago

For additional RCS blocks. The key ones are

This would give you a total of 4 configurations including the 2 stock ones.

I'd also suggest a smaller set of the 4 variants with somewhere around 0.1 - 0.25Kn of thrust for small ships and craft. The full sized ones are just too powerful. These could be very small and as simple as dimples with holes pointing out in the correct direction .

Poodmund commented 5 years ago

Now... I know I campaign for not letting us all get carried away with Restock+ talk... but I feel the stock game is really left wanting for small parts for micro-rockets and probes. So these are all gonna be 0.625m or 1.25m oriented.

Sorry for being a hyprocrite and suggesting parts. ☹️

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

I moved a bunch of parts to the WIP bucket.

@Poodmund

TykoTek commented 5 years ago

If I had a wishlist it would be one part (maybe in a couple difference sizes)

A parachute part that can be stacked below a docking port. So you could have chutes and a docking port without having to stick a bunch of radial chutes around the sides of a command pod. I'm picturing a ring with a two or three blow-away panels around the side like several of the radial chute parts you're making already.

There's an alternative approach of a single part that's docking port and chutes, but I think a separate part that stacks below would have more uses.

(and I know how much fun Nertea is having with chutes right now)

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

Mini radial decoupler, for small satellites. 1/2 of TT-38k length or less.

Chutes are awesome, BTW.

Poodmund commented 5 years ago

@Vladimir-csp , something like this? https://i.imgur.com/hWD7ugm.png (far bottom right corner, radial decoupler)

A 0.625m Size 0 Radial Decoupler.

Vladimir-csp commented 5 years ago

Yes.

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

That could fit well into the 0.625m expansion that has kinda been scoped. However it also will need to come with a radial decoupler revamp, which I am not looking forward to and hasn't been scoped for 0.1.0.

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

I removed the items on this list that made it into committed parts. This comprises most of a 0.625m expansion.

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

Moved more items into actual issues, but they're all post-release (0.2.0+) items

Poodmund commented 5 years ago

Potentially, a cool part could be a truncated hemispherical tank for 3.75m range to allow for a better Shuttle External Tank style end-butt tank... the squished bottom end of the External tank.

untitled-1

We already have the awesome Externl Tank S3 Nose Cone in RS+, it'd be nice to round it off on the other end.

ChrisAdderley commented 5 years ago

Pinnable stuff, woo! I have moved the commited stuff to issue and removed them here.

theonegalen commented 5 years ago

I think that basically everything that Missing History has in the 1.875m stack would be good things to consider for ReStock+.

A linear aerospike that could be mounted in a couple different ways would be great too.

5m parts are put of scope, I assume, and I should just keep using NFLV.

another +1 for hemispherical tanks

ghost commented 5 years ago

Any chance for a new Modular Girder Adapter that goes from the Modular Girder Segment to 0.625m? The current adapter goes from the segment to 1.25m and the Modular Girder Segments are very close to size to the 0.625m size tanks. EDIT: A 0.625m service bay would be incredible as well, I think Ven's Part Revamp had one. In general there's far too few 0.625m parts.

yalov commented 5 years ago

RLA Reborn and Missing History — 2 mods what target the same purpose as Restock+, which is filling niche of missing parts in the game in a very stock-alike style. And Restock+ already have enough amount of similarities with them so user most likely doesn't want to have any of RLA or MH with the Restock+

[updated] I placed list of the missing parts, for increasing change that some artist of the restock+ team catch sight of and would decide to make some of them.

Both RLA and MH: 0.625m Atomic Engine

RLA

Tanks: MP Tanks 0.625m, 1.25m, 2.5m (stock height x2) Xenon 0.625m (stock height x3)

Engines: 2 HighISP MonoProp+EC 0.625m Vacuum SRB 1.25m 7 MP Engines Linear Aerospike

structural: Radial attachment point 0.625m 2 Radial Stack Extender 2 Construction Frame

Electrical Tiny PB-NUK (0.1EC/s)

Missing History Fueled LV-909 1.25m-1.875m Command Pod 0.625-1.25m LFO Adapter

drewcassidy commented 5 years ago

@yalov a lot of those are already planned, either explicitly or not (I’m planning to do a monoprop “fuel cell”, actually a hydrazine APU, when I get to it). I know RLA definitely shaped the parts that I wanted to add to RestockPlus, and I’m pretty sure I suggested some without realizing they weren’t stock

The girder form-factor probe core is something I’ve been too afraid to bring up :P

LouisB3 commented 5 years ago

It would be cool to have a stack-mounted variant of the HG5 antenna. The dish size is about half of the RA-2 antenna, so it could serve as a natural extension of the main relay antenna size progression. Restock+ already provides stack-mounted versions of the radially attached direct antennas, so hopefully this is within precedented scope.

Also, MH-style engine plates offer good utility for making engine clusters, particularly in upper stages where the node/shroud (and optionally decoupler) are useful. I know that Making History in general is out of scope, but these seem like they would be worth considering on their own merits since stock KSP requires kludgy fairing-based solutions to upper-stage clusters. That said, I don't pretend to know if this type of part meets the aesthetic or technical standards of Restock+.

(Thanks for considering these suggestions!)

OnlyLightMatters commented 5 years ago

Hi community. I would personnaly love that ReStock+ could bring a MkII LF tank. There is a LiquidFuel MkI tank in small format (400U LF) -> 1/ large format with 3200U (twice large and twice long) or 2/ large format with 1600U (twice large and same length).

Porkjet commented 4 years ago

Hemispherical Tanks - extra attach nodes pls?

Big fan of these, I like to use em for orbital crafts external modular tanks and often prefer their appearance to the conical adapter parts when tapering tanks down to smaller attachments. To do this, I have to surface attach a docking port or similar to the center of the tank dome, and then center it with the move tool snap. That works, but for ease of use could you add some attach nodes to the top of the tank domes? thanks! @Porkjet

1.25m inline parachute? Shiny! When you do that, can you also make a 1.25m->0.625m cone variant? I think that would be even shinier.

c-lipka commented 4 years ago

0.625m Atomic Engine

@yalov Not sure if I like that idea. Nuclear reactors tend to be bulky, to get a nuclear reaction going (critical mass and all, plus maybe even some rudimentary shielding).

What we far more sorely lack when it comes to nuclear engines is a decent selection of LF-only tanks. Beyond 1.25m, we currently have only Mk3 to resort to.

theJesuit commented 4 years ago

1.25m inline parachute? Shiny!

I agree - this is something that would be awesome. Could this please be something that works well with a 1.25 docking port so the craft is mk3 command -> inline parachute -> 1.25 docking port -> LES, so something that is above to be traversed (a hollow one).

I also just discovered the the LES has a variant to cover the docking port! This is awsome. I was wondering about another variant to cover the inline parachute as well, but I now realise that this wouldn't necessarily be necessary.

You would lose the constant slope between the pod and the LES, but yes if we do an inline chute it should definitely work like that

Thanks!

I've now a further request please. This would be a .0625 Launch Escape System for the Mk1 Command pod. An inline parachute would also be required for this as well I guess, or have the mk1 parachute with a node on top and allow the smaller LES to cover that parachute, or the docking Jr port (or both).

Mercury did have an LES, so this would be filling a stock gap IMHO.

ChrisViral commented 4 years ago

Hes there been any thought into a bigger RoveMate? Feels like there's a bit of a gap into making larger unmanned rovers. Possibly something inspired by Curiosity/Perseverance, could also have an optional integrated RTG to spice it up.

theJesuit commented 4 years ago

A 0.625 inline circular, passable parachute - even with a 'bump'?

Now that Restock has gone done the 'Yes 0.625 IS a passable size for kerbals' wormhole, if/ when the 1.25 hollow inline parachute is added, could a 0.625 one be done too please?

coyotesfrontier commented 3 years ago

With the compact variants of the NFP thrusters, it feels strange that the stock dawn is left out. A compact dawn variant would be perfect for use with the new MTM stage, as the intended four dawns don't fit without clipping.

RichTheWolf257 commented 3 years ago

I got pointed this way from The Forums, so I'll just copy-paste my post here:

"In case an idea like this has already been brought up, I would like to apologize up front for lacking the patience to read through 81 pages of forum posts to find it.

I would like to propose a simple and lightweight addition to the ReStock+ Mod which will efficiently and elegantly work with the Making History parts in order to properly re-create Soyuz and Progress Spacecraft (Shenzou, too if you want to go the extra mile) With as few as just 3 parts not already included. The core of my concept is a collar-like, or cup-like "Add-on module" part, designed be attached to a Clementine, Tangerine, or Mandarin re-entry module (Onion, Pea, or Pomegranate) to convert any of them from a spherical Vostok or Voskhod look-alike into a proper, gumdrop-shaped Soyuz Re-entry Module Look-alike. This single part should have EC, Monoprop, Life Support resources, RCS thrusters, Reaction Wheels, a Probe Core, and, optionally, ablator, and solid fuel landing thrusters, in order to complete a Soyuz-style re-entry capsule.

The other two parts in this addition (or 3 if Shenzou is to be supported) should be a spherical, 2-Kerbal Habitation Can (or science lab, maybe?) to replicate the Soyuz Orbital Module (and a cylindrical version with better stats and capabilities to build the Shenzou), and a spherical, configurable fuel/cargo container to replicate both segments of the Progress Cargo Vessel. Both (or all three) of these should also be compatible with the aforementioned Add-On Module.

Thank you for hearing me out."

Addendum: To the same end, a more compact cosmetic variant of the Clamp-o-Tron Docking Port is also desired, and, less so, cosmetic variants of the Vostock/Voskhod pods with cosmetic hatches added to the front nodes, and the decoupler straps on the sides (and the holes where they're attached) omitted.

Are there any plans to add a 1.875m Docking port to Restock Plus? I've been working on creating a model for an expanded docking ports mod, but just a basic 1.875m port seems to be a good candidate for something that should be in the vanilla game. I was originally planning on doing the central hatch as part of a separate material and texture to be combined with a custom 1.25m docking port, but I could probably put it onto its own 256px square texture. The outer ring shown below is using a 512px square texture.

Here's a preview:

Would a 5m heat shield be a good idea, as it fills in a hole (all sizes apart from 5m have shields), and it could be used with mods like SSPX to make very large return capsules
