Duplicating themes is nice, but would be even better a Linked theme, where there's a "Root Theme" and from there you can define other themes. If you set up any property this will override the root theme, but otherwise will stay like the root theme. If the root theme updates something, this will be reflected on child themes, as long as they don't have any specific setting for it. Long shot I know.
