Refactor to try to avoid crash bug in ESP-IDF #226 #237

Potential fix for #226. Tested with 2 ESP32 devkit1 devices using emulator to confirm no regression in working behaviour. I'm unable to confirm if this truly fixes the underlying issue with the hardware I have at hand.
