Brainstorming the All Feed #567

We need to brainstorm the All feed as it will eventually have very high volume in public groups possibly drowning out the users groups or followed users. I see two distinct paths on this:

1) We can change the newsfeed sorting algorithm so that it balances to like 80% in-network posts vs 20% out-of-network posts. This would basically mean that the user's feed is mostly people he follows or connected to people he follows / groups he's in with a spattering of out of network posts mixed in there. I want to keep the feed as chronological as possible with the least amount of sorting possible. The problem is that once the country/state/town groups get fired up, it will be very hard for the user to see his other groups - in which case, then they have to tap the group filters to see those specific groups and that's not fun either..

2) We give the user to customize their All feed to determine what's included in it (e.g. public groups) vs not. The drawback to this approach is that some users will never be exposed to their public groups because they'll never tap on those feeds. While they'll still get boosted posts in their All feed, they wouldn't be exposed to strangers posts... I don't really like that either.

I don't like either of these options. We need to think about this. It might need to be a bit of both. Where user has ability to "show me all content chronologically, show me mostly content from my public groups, show me mostly content from my other groups, show me mostly content from followed users"... I don't know.
