Whish for more diversity regarding jobs, businesses, authorities and so on #16

Dear Developer, thank you for this awesome tool! I just started a new campain and your tool provided me with an endles Opertunity to fill my town with live. Thanks a lot.

During this proces i noticed something.

1) not every person in the age between 18 and 60 had a job or was working somewhere (no big deal, since unemployment is common everywhere). But you might want to add a configuration regarding wealth of a town in general.

2) there are a ton of jobs or workplaces missing. Starting from the public administration, Militia or Armee, Education, Relegious Work, most of the service sector and so on. Your current state would work in a small village, but it is a bit lacking when it comes to towns and cities.

2.1) i also would love to see a job, not just what stand a person has or where it workes, but what. The Girl working in a brothel, is she a room maid, a kitchen maid or a slave (if thats a thing in this jurisdiction) and forced to do sex work?

3) You might want to consider what kind of authority rules over the land/city, therefore some Buisinesses or Jobs might be more relevant. See, in a theocracy priest might be more prominent then aristocrats.

4) I find the distribution of races to be a bit stiff. I would llike to see a percentile for every race, that i can manipulate. Maybe a random function and or some presets, since most towns will be human dominated.

5) and the names, oh boy the names. They all sound like they came from the same person. very few noticeable distinct names, that sounded like there where from a different region or country or race. No Indivcations of noble persons standig in the name, like Sir, of, van, de, or even a rank (think about the authority of the town).

6) i had the feeling that all buisnesses where owned by a married couple. which i think is even for a high magic world like DnD a bit unusual, especially how many fightings, wars and bloodshed is going on this world. Are there any Singles? Persons who left home after adultry to find their own place in this world?

7) all buisnesses offered the same wares/inventories or nearly the same. It would feel way more immersive if there where at least three levels (cheap, moderate and pricey) with different level of stock and quality. Same goes for temple and other services. all depending somewhat on the size and the wealth in the settings. It is a bit hard to explain why a master alchemist is having his shop in a poor small village.

I know I'm asking a lot, I realy do. I hope you find all or most of my points relevant and have the fire in you to make this truely immersive.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for your feedback! Glad you have been enjoying it so far.

  1. There is a prosperity setting that controls the number of mercantile and tradesmen, which should translate to more jobs. However, there is a limit to the number of a specific type of business can exist depending on settlement size. I will take a look to see if the unemployment percentages make sense.

  2. Public admin, militia/army: part of the lack of this is that I wanted users to be able to layer in their own setting over the settlement. E.g. if someone is a noble, but your setting is a theocracy, then really that person would be a Church official who rules through Church authority, not bloodlines. However, I have been thinking I need to at least include local guards for villages/towns, and probably garrisons for some towns/cities.

Education: I have some changes to add magic locations, but part of that was also making mundane places of education. I still need to do a little more research into what medieval education was like.

Religious work: I had imagined this to be facilitated through temples. Was there something else you had in mind?

2.1. I am probably not going to implement this level of detail. Especially stuff like sex slaves, which I leave to the tastes of the user. I like to keep things flexible and have these NPCs at various locations available to be used however. Getting into who is a busboy vs a stable boy at a tavern, for instance, is not something that is that useful. During game time, you can pretty much make a snap decision about who is who.

  1. Ties a little into item 2. However, the DMG does have a table for types of government. Maybe a good option would be to let the user select which one they want or let them choose Random. This would be a fairly substantial feature request since it would affect a lot of aspects of the settlement generation.

  2. My initial thought was to simplify this for users, but I can see why someone might want more granular controls. I think the way to implement this would be an "advanced" mode that lets you enter the percentage or weight for each race.

  3. I might be able to add rank in to item 3, but I have so far not done that to keep things setting agnostic. Each race has their own unique name list, with half races having overlaps and some race lists supplemented with human names. Apart from that, there's a 50% minimum to generate a unique name using Markov chains, with the likelihood increasing for shorter lists. I would like to expand some race name lists since WotC really only provides a handful of example with very little linguistic guidance. There are some races with no name lists provided at all, which is absurd. I could look into getting a wider sample of names with different constructions (van, de, etc).

  4. There should be single people who own businesses. I can take a look at the numbers to see if they seem underrepresented in the population in general, though.

  5. I am in the process of overhauling any magic-related inventory/services. So yeah, temples are mostly the same at the moment, but are going to change majorly.

Shops do have some randomization in items available, but certain staples are almost always available. E.g. general stores should always have basic gear like rope. Shortages exist, but as a player if my DM told me I couldn't buy rope in a store, I would think they were messing with me on purpose.

I think I will look at taverns and make a determination about what levels of accommodations are available. At the time, I just made everything available so people could see prices of everything, but it would not be too hard to restrict some options.

As for other types of item quality, some of the magic stuff I am working on will include options to allow magic weapons/armor to appear in appropriate stores.

I will most likely need to break this up into smaller tickets to better track each enhancement. I will update this again with those ticket numbers.

Dear Praxxian,

thank you for your answer and please excuse my late reply.

All my points where not meant to be truely realized, they where more meant to be a vision of what could be.

Please don't fell pressured by me.

That said it is nice to see that many of my ideas are already on your agenda.

and to make it a bit easy for you, i will focus on answering your questions.

1) Yes, religious Work is mainly done in temple. But there are other institutions as well: Monestaries (which would be bigger than a Temple), Orphanages, there could be secret Temples as well

2) Regarding Names. As soon as i wrote this i knew where the issue was. It is the origins of the name templates, they where all created by native english speakers. It was so obvious. Problem is, that is way more divers regarding the region the city is located in than the race itself. For example, a Person in an eastern (chinese) setting (regardles of the Race) might more likely have a name like "Méiguī huā" than Roseblossom. But overall, this would be a major overhaul regarding naming and nothing i would feel well about forcing on you.

I'm very glad that you do value my Ideas and are willing to improve your tool.

If anything occours feel free to contact me again.

It's no pressure at all! I like getting this feedback because it gives me motivations to add features. It helps to know that I am adding something someone will actually want/need.

Yes, I am a native English speaker, so those biases are there. But that's also why I open the name lists up for editing.

Apologies for the long wait. I have had some family stuff going on and have not been able to work on the project for a little while. I very much would like to get back to maintaining it, so thank you for your patience.
