Re: the table Al brought up during our meeting on January 12.
"Wide tables" that will not fit on a braille page require special formats. One of those special formats is a Linear Table format
We use a linear table format on several tables, but the example we discussed was Table 8.12, in section 8.1 of AATA.
Our linear table format is missing the following elements.
A transcriber's note (TN) explaining the change to the table format should be placed before the table content, within the box. If a table title is present, then the TN should follow the table title and a blank line should precede the TN. TN text example provided by BANA:
"Columns follow one another in this order: (7-5)
(blank line)
Column 1 Heading: Column 2 Heading; Column 3
Heading; Column 4 Heading (1-3)
(blank line)"
First column entry should be followed by a colon. We currently have a semicolon after the first entry.
Blank entries in the table should be indicated with three unspaced dot 5s, and a TN should be left explaining the use. This TN can be included with the TN explaining the change in table format. In the sample table provided by BANA, the dot 5s TN comes before the change to table format explanation. TN text example provided by BANA:
"A series of three dot 5s indicates a blank entry."
Do not divide a row between braille pages.
As with all tables and boxes, a table should be kept on one braille page if possible. This may involve moving the table to a new braille page.
