[x] appveyor builds pass the tests but then simply hang, timing out the build. See here to RDP into the worker machine on appveyor to debug.
[x] coverage on travis and in docker simply hangs during testing. revert commit 26b813a82326350139f5af0fd14eab0d765730c2 when fixed.

both of these may be the result of unintentionally running parallel code in tests.
