Google Alert Items not being added as items

Hi @AramZS --

One of our partners is trying to use this google alert and it doesn't seem to be able to retrieve the content. It seems like it is checking the feeds and finding content but not bringing the content into All Content. Below is the log, any idea what might be going on here? It seems like it might be failing or something at 16:11:22 ?

After the first training that the Ashaninka received (reported in my last blogpost), another three followed. The classes consisted in testing the adaptations of the application and in training them on the use of the smartphone by doing practical exercises in the village area. I adapted the application according to Ashaninka demands, incorporating new icons and suppressing the ones that were not needed. At the same time, on each training I evaluated with them the difficulties they were having. As a result of that, we also incorporated a pedagogic resource based on sound. So, we voice recorded in Ashaninka the meanings of the icons that were more difficult for them to understand intuitively, so that they could long-click on theicons to hear them. I am still assessing the effectiveness of this resource. Expedition final

During this period of time I also started training a group of five Ashaninka to learn how to transfer the data from the smartphone to the computer and to visualise it. In the village, only two people have a computer, and none of them were part of the training. Having said that, I must say I am very impressed with the speed they are learning to do it. They already had two classes. During these classes, I am also noting down aspects that can be improved in the software user interface and reporting them to the team in London, who is adapting everything that is possible. The idea is to make this interface as user friendly as possible, so communities can manage the data by themselves.

Besides allDSC01482 that, we did an exciting practical exercise on another occasion. We went on a three-day expedition on Amonia River – which is the river that crosses their land -, up until the border with Peru, and we checked the protection of their territory along the way. We took that opportunity also to test the use of the Japanese pot to charge the smartphones and the Gorilla solar panel. We were all happy to verify that this area of their land is fully protected! The Japanese pot worked quite well, and the Ashaninka used a fire technique that ensures the cable charger will not be damaged. On the other hand, the solar panel did not bear the expected results. Even though the panel was exposed to very strong light, it was not capable of charging a phone.

As life is not only made of work, I also had plenty of fun moments with the Ashaninka, especially during the celebration of the demarcation of their land. Every year they hold a big party on June 24 to remember the day when they had the traditional rights over their land recognised. They invite their friends, partners and Ashaninka relatives from Brazil and Peru to celebrate with them. This was the 23rd anniversary. The days that preceded the party very also marked by events iDSC01225n the village, such as bow and arrow competition and spiritual rituals. It was really great to share this moment with them.

I am now heading to Peru with a group of Ashaninka leaders from Apiwtxa where they will meet their relatives from Saweto (Alto Tamaya) and discuss strategies to strengthen the protection of their territory after the outrageous murder of four Ashaninka leaders in September last year. Their land is finally being demarcated and the Ashaninka from Apiwtxa are together in their struggle to secure their rights over it.

I never liked extreme things. When I was young my brother was the one that was doing all that – skydiving, parachuting, bungee jumping, he did all this. I, on the other hand, was playing with my LEGO box all time. That is the reason why, when I met Katherine Homewood and Jerome Lewis and they both told me about the possibility of using Extreme Citizen Science in my project, I was a little bit suspicious. I was not sure that I was prepared to change my whole life approach.

However, life is there to be challenged. And even if I am not very keen on extreme things, I do like to use new ways of doing stuff. Probably it is a LEGO-addict thing to do. Anyway, when I heard Jerome talking about ExCiteS I need to confess that I became extreme-ly excited with the idea and decided to apply it in my project.

It’s been almost 2 years since that initial conversation. After receiving grants from Rolex Awards and the WWF to apply the method in the Pantanal, Brazil, here am I trying to explain how I dealt with my first Extreme experience in Citizen Science.

RC5In the project the ExCiteS method was used to better understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of natural resource use. Once we could record this data into scientifically robust and locally legible presentational forms, the customary rules of natural resource use could be discussed with the same level of importance as established environmental scientific information, a request from local communities since the first conflicts over land use in the region arose.

To apply this method the steps outlined by Lewis (2007) were adapted as fallows:

A Pantanal version of the icon-driven software Sapelli was created before the start of the fieldwork, in which the following resources were inserted in a decision tree logic: fish, wood, straw, bait, hunting, fruits, honey, drinking water and wild rice; and the following choices added: “using the place” or “preparing the place”, “how many people?” and “name of the place?”. (Figure 1)

For several days in the community the handheld GPS was used in order to get as much feedback as possible on the icons.

A debriefing session with the group was held, which showed that the decision tree logic should be simpler and the icons should be as close to reality as possible. (Figure 2)

A new decision tree was built, in which just the most-used items were present: fish and bait (subdivided into crabs and small fishes). New icons were also added. (Figure 3)

A second debriefing session was held, showing that some people were still unhappy with the software because some of them do not gather bait. Thus, in an iterative discussion together with local people we decided to build a second decision tree logic for fishermen in which they could record places they fish and places they no longer fish due to land use restrictions. Thus, two different decision trees were used, one for fishermen and one for bait gatherers.

The data collected by people were stored in the mobile phones and collected each fieldtrip.

The handheld GPS used was a Samsung X-Cover mobile phone, which is sold as water and shock resistant. However two of them broke in the field: in one the glass broke and in the second one the system collapsed when one person try to use his SIM Card in the phone.

From the total of 40 household families interviewed and asked about the use of the handheld GPS, just two accepted to use it. The first was a typical Bait Gatherer family where fishing is more related to food consumption, and the second was a family of fishermen, where fishing is more related to economic activity. I chose to focus on these two different families to get two different perspectives of land and natural resource use in the region.

It took approximately four months to reach the final stage of the method (number 6); therefore even though my fieldwork started in March 2014 the fishermen only started to collect the data in August 2014. Because of this, and to ensure proper understanding of land tenure and natural resource use in the region, a second participatory mapping approach was added.

RC6This alternative method consists of displaying local knowledge about the issue in question on a satellite image (Chambers, 2006; Stephanson and Mascia, 2014). In the case of this project I sought to represent on the map issues related to land tenure and the use of natural resources by local people and other stakeholders. Images from the new Brazilian collection of satellite images “Rapid Eye” with 5 meters of resolution in a 1:20 000 scale were used. In total 8 different maps were printed that taken together covered the whole Western Border of the Pantanal region.

All maps were printed on a special plastic paper, on which people could draw, easily erase, and then draw again. Hence, after all interviews pictures were taken of the locally created maps and all the information on the maps was then erased. The main objective of this was first to observe strict data anonymity, second to avoid any previous information biasing the next interview, and finally to facilitate the drawing. The maps were used in both key informant and group interviews.

In contrast to the Extreme Citizen Science method, the information sought was not restricted to fishing and gathering bait. Data was collected about settlements no longer in use, places of intensive use, fishing camps, man-made mounds, cemeteries, locations of houses, important spots for gathering bait, regions of conflict, and the boundaries of local people’s territory.

Now I am back in London and I am analysing the data I collected during the last year. It is amazing because I have started to visualise people’s pattern of natural resource use and elaborate some ideas about how we could use this information to improve environmental management in the region. I need to confess that Extreme Citizen Science has changed the way I see things, and maybe, soon, I am thinking to try my first Roller Coaster!

The idea was to co-design a mobile application that could enable users to identify and map barriers to accessibility within the urban realm using Sapelli, a mobile data collection and sharing platform designed with a particular focus on users with little or no prior ICT experience. Sapelli offers pictorial decision trees and icon-driven interfaces as opposed to the forms and check boxes that often require a high level of mobility to operate.

The workshop commenced with a brainstorming session about the barriers encountered on a daily basis in the public realm and these were then classified into logical groups. Participants went out into the ‘wilds’ of Carshalton to capture photographic and audio material based on the good, bad and the impassable! Going out and physically identifying issues was done primarily to explore whether there were missing gaps to what had already been identified as barriers, which indeed it did. The exercises set the scene for the next step in the co-design process. Based on the different groupings that were further refined participants began to construct the decision tree which they decided should focus on what they were trying to achieve – crossing for example – and the identification of barriers that prevented them from achieving that particular goal. In the design of the decision tree people were keen to see that best practice and positive examples were also recognised and captured.

ARCMap2After a lively and lengthy discussion the first draft of the prototype was constructed and the team are now tasked with building the application, with the relevant icon designs. This will be used over a period of two weeks by all of the co-designers and the data mapped to the Community Maps platform. We will then hold a further session to assess the relevance of the classification and hierarchical groupings, the efficacy of the application and any usability issues that may have been encountered.

The future aim and goal for those who participated is that this application can be used by a wider audience to identify short-term and permanent barriers to accessibility which can then be directed to the relevant bodies responsible for addressing these issues. In addition, participants are also keen to see that the data collected could be used in a navigation app designed for wheelchair users.

@jschell42 Yes, we determined that the feed wasn't retrieving because the php version was out of date. PressForward requires PHP 3.4 or higher. Once the site's php library was upgraded the feed began retrieving. See http://php.net/supported-versions.php for more details on current versions of php.
