Ha, this term always gets me! Whenever I come across it in a context where it's not perfectly obvious that we are talking about system login, "display manager" makes me think of window managers. Which is silly of course, given that window managers don't really manage displays, either (they manage windows, d'oh).

I love these nuggets of computer nomenclature and etymology, especially if it leads to a more self-conscious use of terminology.
