Description

New information came in from The Rise Power General Assembly #122 Consented on March 24, 2017.

First, here's the new website: http://www.newfoundersconference.com/

Let's work together, unite the next generation of leaders, and modernize our democracy

Due to a lot of new information, I want the community to know about this see if we want to continue in engaging.

More Info (from their site):

Complex challenges require innovative solutions. The next wave of leadership is rising to the challenge. There is a new political frontier emerging, and at the forefront are the New Founders, forging the path for America’s future. RISE Movement is powering the inaugural New Founders Conference, hosted in the center of the country - Chicago, Illinois - on October 24-26. This is not your ordinary conference. For the first time, innovators and trailblazers on the cutting edge of civics, technology, media, electoral politics, and policy will converge for an experience unlike any other. These groups and individuals are uniting in the spirit of collaboration to: Eliminate silos across the myriad of organizations leading the resistance and change space, with emerging and established organizations alike coming together to create the new center for coordinated action. Share key learnings and resources through our Demo Day programming track, providing organizations the opportunity to highlight their work. Release several new tech enabled resources, infrastructure elements, and tools that will dramatically improve the processes, systems, and strategy capabilities of those working for progress. Showcase the emerging bench of new leaders, who are already changing the political landscape as we know it. Formulate policy changes that can tackle the challenges ahead with education, globalization, automation and climate change. Provide a new "tent" under which a this emerging wave of leaders and changemakers can act most effectively in order to build lasting infrastructure and make politics an everyday activity. The future is now, and the New Founders are forging the path for America to reach its fullest potential. Are you ready to stake your claim in building a just, equitable, inclusive, and innovative America?

Appreciate you resurfacing this. I like the conference, scope and priority, though their primary purpose makes me feel really uneasy:

across the myriad of organizations leading the resistance

Plus, several of the affiliated organizations seem rather partisan. I'd happily have them using the tools created here, however I think signing up for this signifies that we're leading the resistance, which is counter to our non-partisan purpose, in my opinion.

I've been doing some research on RISE Movement, since looking through the Network Of Networks. It seems decidedly establishment Democrat, in its values. The 1st Quarter report includes this statement:

"Democrats have watched their party split in two during the last election, and a new, quasi-socialist arm emerge with the charismatic Bernie Sanders. It’s possible, if we don’t act now, that a three-party system might emerge in the next decade, if the Tea Party and the quasi-socialist movements continue to move to the sides."

It contains some excellent statements and details about working to turn Congress back to Democrats, but it is devoid of specifics regarding who the organization supports between establishment and grassroots candidates. Most of the focus is on retaking the White House in 2020, and there are more references to Clinton than to anyone else.

The founder seems to emphasize this: http://www.riseparty.org/why_rise_with_us

This seems very partisan and definitely anti-grassroots. Our presence there seems to put us in the position of being part of the "quasi-socialist arm" that split the Democratic party. This suggests that ProgCode's participation is viewed either as an adversary or as conforming to support a partisan agenda against grassroots. I offer this as a topic for discussion, and not as a conclusion.

Thank you @jpb5013 for expressing your concerns and @desmondjones for your research on New Founders Conference fka RISE Movement (NFC). I agree that there are some real issues with alignment of purpose for NFC and ProgCode's stated core goals and values about non-partisanship.

Problems - Transparency & Alignment of Purpose

When the issue was originally proposed in the Mar 19 community meeting, the community was asked to consent without knowing fully who the "other progressive movement leaders" were and whether the core goals and values of the host and other speakers were aligned with ProgCode's.

Today, seeing ProgCode listed on their website with these other partisan organizations, earlier discussions of "the cost of public perception" is really resurfacing. On its face, it would be easy for the public to come to the conclusion that ProgCode is somehow aligned with the partisan groups listed on the NFC website.

An additional concern is that there is no transparency on the NFC website about that org's funding and whether they are themselves associated with partisan groups or big money groups--two issues unaligned with ProgCode's core objective as stated in Abstract, para. 8 of the Organizational Structure and Mission, Objectives, Goals, para. 2 of the Guidelines documents.

Proposed Solution

Before the community votes on whether to consent to attend meetings, give presentations and appear in materials promoting any outside organizations, it might be wise for the community member making the proposal to first consider will this potential relationship further ProgCode's core objective? If the answer is yes, the community member might then make the case to the community at the time of the proposal, show how the proposed evangelism furthers ProgCode's core objective prior to seeking community consent.

These are great inputs! Thanks so much for raising this, I wanted to have this go through the consent process again as new info has emerged. Looking forward to the discussion tonight.
