Revise 2016/17 Revenue & Budget Projections for Grant Applications due 1/31

On 1/18/2018 Pamela attended an NMV webinar for Innovation Fund grant applications and posted the questions in the #wg-progcode-funding Slack channel for community review and input. In 2017, 2.5% of NMV grant applications were approved. Funding available for 2018 is between $50k-250k per grant. NMV Grant Application is due 1/31/2018. Final decisions will be made in April, 2018.

Application Questions

Initial grant applications request the following info:

• How many full-time & part-time employees.
• Projected revenue and expenditures (including staff salaries + health ins) beginning Spring 2018.
• Determination of how much runway $X grant would give applicants for 2018/19.
• How applicants propose to raise revenue thereafter.

Problem

To answer the four questions above, we must first:

• Determine the most urgent job-related tasks and separate them into job categories.
• Determine the salary and hourly requirement for each job.
• Determine the proposed cost of healthcare for each employee.
• Update the existing Funding Framework & Budget Breakdown to reflect the foregoing.
• Determine the highest priority revenue sources for 2018.
• Present a draft of the responses to the community for discussion in the next Ops Meeting.
• Seek consent to implement the responses and submit the grant application ASAP, before 1/31/2018.

Benefit

Answering the foregoing questions will enable the Operations team to:

• Apply for the initial $50k-250k before 1/31.
• Be prepared to apply for subsequent 2018 funding opportunities.

Plan

• [x] Operations team will informally discuss the questions raised above and draft proposed answers before the next Ops meeting for presentation to the community for discussion Mon., 1/22/2018.
• [x] Community will discuss the draft responses and make suggested revisions at the 1/22 Ops meeting.

Decision Making

• Seeking community discussion at the 1/22 Ops Mtg on appropriate line-by-line updates to the 2016/17 Budget Breakdown.
• Seeking consent to proceed updating the 2016/17 Budget Breakdown as decided by the community during the Ops Mtg discussion.
• Seeking consent to implement the updated 2018/19 Budget Breakdown figures and use them to complete and file the NMV grant application before the 2/2/2018 application deadline.
• Community vote on consent to proceed with budget update and implement grant application.
• If consent to proceed and implement are approved, Ops team will complete and submit the application online before the 2/2/2018 deadline.

Consent to proceed updating the 2016/17 Budget Breakdown was given 1/22/2018. Consent to implement filing the NMV with bottom line annual budget as reflected in the 2018/19 Proposed Budget was given 1/29/2018.

UPDATE: On Feb 27, 2018, ProgCode received an email notification from Wesley Panek via F6S that we have made it past the initial applicant screening process. Following is the body of the email as well as important upcoming dates.

Dear Open Call Applicants,

Congratulations! You have made it past the first stage of our screening process. Here's what to expect:

Shortlist Announcement (mid March) The NMV team, along with an investment committee of external experts, is currently conducting a more in-depth evaluation of your application, after which you will receive a message informing you whether or not you have moved onto the next in the process, a first round interview.

First Round Interview (March 19-30) We will interview the CEO / Executive Director or one of the founders of the team to learn more about your application (over video). Please hold these dates available for interviews as much as possible.

Finalist Announcement (early April) After first round interviews, you will receive a message informing you whether or not you have have been selected as a finalist, and will be asked to provide more information about your work at this time (e.g., financials, references).

Final Diligence (complete by end of April): We will ask for additional information to complete our diligence, which may include another interview with your core team (over video) to help us make our final decisions.

Latest email today from Wesley Panek via F6S indicates the NMV team and investment committee experts are wrapping up in-depth evaluation of our application. We can expect to receive an email from them Saturday, March 17 letting us know if we cleared the next hurdle!

If successful, we move on to a First Round Interview next week, Mon. 3/19 - Fri. 3/30, consisting of:

1. 30 minute elevator pitch
2. Q&A with two members of the investment committee related to our application, model and impact
