This will describe the procedures and details for operating an interactive intro to Kubernetes workshop. This document will also propose some ideas for using this workshop to promote the Progressive Coders Network to like minded communities.
If you are interested in participating in the workshop as an instructor; feel free to contact me at alex.vanino@gmail.com.
Workshop Proposals
Goals
Promote the Progressive Coders Network to a mission-aligned audience and raise awareness of ProgCoders mission.
Provide a valuable resource on learning the in’s and out’s of kubernetes that is available to everyone.
Use these workshops as an opportunity to network and partner with like minded and mission-aligned organizations on similar productions.
Community Involvement
Community involvement is a key feature to this workshop. A live video and screen sharing conference will be available on zoom and free but limited on-site workshop spots will be available during a registration period.
Workshop Registration
Due to the size and nature of the venues business and the nature of this workshop, registration for both the on-site and live zoom conference will be required. Can handle this registration on Google Forms.
Industry and Community Networking and Outreach
The open availability and relevant technical content of these workshops give a great opportunity for networking among the greater tech community, both in NYC and online through youtube, LinkedIn and blog comments.
I would like to reach out to currently active project leaders within the ProgCode network and get video and text clips of what ProgCoders is to them and how ProgCoders has affected their project. A few good choices that come to mind: John Evans of Wobbly(King Mob), Robert Diamond (rmd6502), Jake Varghese (jake3030), Ilona Brand(Ilona_moveon), and Corey Henderson.
There should be attempts to reach out to mission-aligned organizations who publicly state that they use kubernetes or make heavy use of micro services architecture(Public blog and social media posts). Getting a quick video clip about their usage of kubernetes, or making them aware of the workshop if they aren’t using kubernetes would be the ultimate goal of outreach.
Produced in partnership with RapidSOS
Since I’ll be producing and teaching the workshop, I thought producing this workshop in partnership with the company I work for would be a great match.
Who is RapidSOS?
RapidSOS, based in Midtown Manhattan, New York City is a public safety and emergency technology company that provides a direct data link from connected devices such as iphones, android phones, wearables, IOT devices, ect to 9-1-1 and first responders. RapidSOS now connects more than a quarter billion devices directly to the majority of local US public safety agencies. While the company isn't a non-profit; it's primary focus before revenue is saving lives and improving an antiquated 911 system. I believe that RapidSOS and Progressive Coders have similar values; and I believe would make a great pairing to run this workshop.
Video’s are better than a thousand words; especially in the case of the following three video’s on RapidSOS and our employee’s:
I will be proposing the usage of RapidSOS’s Manhatten office for use as our workshop venue.
The RapidSOS Kubernetes Professionals
RapidSOS has a team of Kubernetes Professions that cover every facet of Kubernetes; Everything from development and scaling of applications on kubernetes to security on kubernetes clusters.
It’s possible that some of these members may be available to participate as workshop co-instructors, who are capable of speaking on more advanced topics, but I will wait until RapidSOS approval is granted to approach these individuals.
Subject to RapidSOS Senior Leadership Approval
This partnership will be subject to the approval of the RapidSOS senior leadership team.
Before preparing a proposal to present to the RapidSOS Senior leadership team, I first want approval granted by Progressive Coders Network to pursue the proposal process with RapidSOS.
The proposal process will involve me drafting up the details of the workshop in a proposal that is very similar to the one you are reading now. It will contain information on Progressive Coders and their mission. There is a possibility that a leadership team member or someone from the RapidSOS PR department might want to have a quick video conference to work out some of the details regarding the production partnership. In that case, I just ask that one of the senior Progressive Coder Network coordinators such as Stephen or Pam is available. We are very flexible on meeting times and should be able to accommodate anyones schedule within reason.
Workshop Requirements
Kubernetes Lab and Hosting
There are several no cost solutions for this that can be taken advantage of. \
https://kubesail.com/ - Kubesail is a managed kubernetes cluster provider that gives you a free tier of their service to explore and learn kubernetes with. Seeing as how their business is strongly focused on kubernetes education; reaching out to them and seeing if any partnership opportunities exist might be a good idea. hello@kubesail.com
Webinar / Conferencing Providers
I recommend we use Progressive Coders paid Zoom account. It’s generally the best quality conference and screen share service out there right now.
If approved by RapidSOS, we can use google hangouts to host, although it really doesn’t have any real benefits over zoom.
Workshop Venue
The RapidSOS hosted Venue
RapidSOS's Midtown Manhattan office over at Park Ave and 33rd St, is that venue that we will use if approval is granted by Progressive Coders Network and the RapidSOS senior leadership team.
The venue has a large lounge/kitchen area that was specifically designed to host large streamable conferences. The space can host about 80-100 people comfortably, or around 30-50 people if we have tables setup. The space also has a BYOB bar as well as panoramic views of midtown.
For presenting, the lounge area has a full room sound system along with 8 TV’s and a large screen projector for displaying the workshop content. The lounge also has ceiling mounted 1080p remote controlled cameras for broadcasting live.
Blog Article Series
Due to the complex nature and the large amount of content presented by this workshop, I will be preparing a premade workshop outline and class guide that will also work well when converted to a blog article. The blog article will make a great SEO optimized promotion opportunity that will stay relevant for several years.
A blog platform will be needed for the blog article. I noticed that The Progressive Coders network has a section on medium.com. I believe that would be a great place to post this blog series.
