The People United (TPU; https://www.thepeopleunite.us/) is a group of grassroots volunteers from the Bernie 2016 campaign, looking to change the world through progressive education, activism and civic engagement. TPU has curated a list of more than 300 local, statewide, and national progressive organizations (e.g. San Francisco Berniecrats, FairVote) that would be great for progressives to volunteer at or otherwise support. To make this list accessible, we want to create an interactive map of progressive organizations in the United States. Users could use this to find organizations near them (or nationwide organizations) that are working on issues that they care about, or to subscribe to new organizations/events based on tags/categories/locations. Organizations could also form coalitions with other organizations working on similar issues, by subscribing to tags on this website.
Some specifications we'd like for this application:
A way for non-programmer members of TPU to easily add new organizations to the map after vetting them. Organizations would include categories and other tags in their schema.
Represent each organization's main address (or meeting place if preferred), as well as its events/actions, as a pin/circle.
Allow zooming in on specific parts of the map.
Allow filtering by ZIP code/distance, as well as searching by general category (e.g. Environment, Criminal Justice Reform, etc) or more specific tags (e.g. "California Single-Payer").
After clicking on an organization's pin/circle, the popup would show a blurb about that org, Volunteer/Donate buttons (if applicable to that organization), and an email point of contact (if applicable).
Let users subscribe to organizations near them in categories/tags they're interested in, so they can be notified when one is added or when one schedules an action/event. A list of popular tags might help users decide which ones they want to subscribe to.
Let organizations (e.g. Our Revolution) post meetings/actions and automatically notify organizations (not just individuals) in the area that might be interested based on their tags - to foster org-to-org collaboration and coalition-building.
Who we're looking for
We're looking for lead developers who are interested in TPU's goals, and can help us create this interactive map and database of progressive organizations. I can help these developers with code review and other feedback along the way.
Skills we're looking for:
Experience with full-stack web development and database management
Familiarity with good design and UX practices
Familiarity with map-based applications preferred
Ability to work mostly independently, with code review and other feedback/help along the way.
Tools
Whatever stack you're comfortable with, but Django/Heroku would be preferred.

A good starting point for the map part of this project might be the Bernie Map created by Grassroots for Sanders and Rapi (e.g. http://map.ourrevolution.com/, or http://www.berniemap.com/).
