Drawdown Solutions aims to determine when and how reaching drawdown is possible, using existing, well-proven, and scalable climate solutions. To uncover that answer, the team reviews and evaluates the potential performance of technologies and practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and/or enhance carbon sequestration while providing many co-benefits to human society.

Drawdown Solutions seeks to determine when and how reaching drawdown is possible, using existing, well-proven, and scalable climate solutions. To uncover that answer, the team reviews and evaluates the potential performance of technologies and practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and/or enhance carbon sequestration from the atmosphere. These climate solutions span many sectors; all of them are financially viable, are already scaling (at least in some places), and generate many co-benefits for people and the planet.

Drawdown research fellows analyze solutions, drawing upon years of advanced study, experience, and a wide range of backgrounds. For each technology or practice, we review extensive literature and data describing its potential scale, impact, and cost. We then build analytical models to estimate how many gigatons of carbon dioxide (or equivalent amounts of other greenhouse gases) a given solution could avoid and/or remove over time, as well as the cost (or savings) of implementing and operating it. We integrate the solution models within and across sectors to determine if and when we would reach drawdown under a given scenario. Every solution we identify is validated by a minimum of two experts via an external review process.

Drawdown Solutions is part of the Drawdown Global Research Collaborative, a unique ecosystem of researchers and contributors working together to create a solutions-oriented knowledge commons and accompanying decision-support tools under the Drawdown Framework. Collaborative members advance global systems research by expanding on Project Drawdown’s research and supporting the contextualization of climate solutions research on a regional, country, or local scale as well as at various contextual levels to provide meaningful information to businesses and policymakers.
