Possible new city: Pittsburgh? #1626

Hey, I know you are all busy (and it looks like you are launching in Seattle!). Would you consider launching in Pittsburgh in the near future? I'd be interested in helping out!

Yeah thanks so much for contacting us! Could you also let us know a bit more about your motivations for wanting to launch in Pittsburgh? In what ways would you be able to help out? @jonfroehlich is definitely the best person to weigh in on this, but I'm sure we'd both love to hear more about where you're coming from!

Hey, sure. I'm a PhD student at CMU, I mostly work on accessibility projects for people with vision impairments, but I'm interested in mapping for accessibility purposes in general. I chatted with @jonfroehlich https://github.com/jonfroehlich a bit at ASSETS about the project, and worked with Kotaro Hara a bit when he was here.

Pittsburgh is a city that has a lot of inaccessible sidewalks due to steps, broken sidewalks due to trees, lack of curb cuts etc. There has been a lot of effort to map some of this, like city steps, but I haven't seen anything for curb cuts, etc. There has definitely been interest at the city level in making the city more accessible, especially with 'zero-step' policies to help businesses make their entrances wheelchair accessible. I'm not sure how much funding there is from the dept of mobility and transportation to fix sidewalk issues, but mapping it is a first step!

I'd be able to donate some time to help launch here over the summer or later, either by fielding questions/issues or advertising to get people started doing missions. Additionally, I'd love if I could connect this with some local advocacy groups (Access Mob Pittsburgh) and local government (ADA director in Pittsburgh, perhaps Dept. of Mobility), although I'm not personally involved with them yet.

Thanks for reaching out. To better understand the types of questions and discussions we have about deployment cities, see this thread inquiring about deployment to Los Alamos, NM (https://github.com/ProjectSidewalk/SidewalkWebpage/issues/1379) and our general discussion thread (https://github.com/ProjectSidewalk/SidewalkWebpage/issues/281).

But, in summary, here are some things we think about when choosing deployment cities: geographic diversity (because accessible pedestrian infrastructure varies significantly by region), city size (smaller cities tend to have fewer resources and thus may benefit more from Project Sidewalk), and the presence of local advocates (either citizens or governments who can help us recruit and sustain communities of volunteers to help). You started to address some of these in the thread above.

Also, because deploying into a new city is not (yet) completely automated, I would estimate that it takes @misaugstad (our lead dev and research scientist) about ~2-3 days per city to setup and configure the city. I could be off on my estimate, however--but it's a non-trivial amount of time unfortunately.

So, all that being said, it's great to hear about your interest in Sidewalk and Pittsburgh--I think I can speak for the entire team that this has exciting potential but our excitement is tempered by our current workload and commitment to our new deployments in Newberg, OR and Seattle, WA. The more resources we could scrounge up to help support Pittsburgh (in terms of $$, interest, and personnel), the more likely it is that we could deploy there.

All Project Sidewalk data is open as is the code. See /api in any Project Sidewalk server.
