New Chapter Request - Lagos #65

Closed chuta closed 4 years ago

chuta commented 4 years ago

Hi, I would like to start a ProtoSchool chapter for Lagos. I am @mezie16 on twitter and also manage @BlockchainNG also on twitter. I'm the founder and coordinator of Blockchain Nigeria User Group (https://blockchainnigeria.group) and our social enterprise is running a training program for blockchain and decentralized application developers (https://blockchaindev1000.com), and Proto Schoool curriculum will be a great resource to enable us to deliver on our mandate to our community members. I will be co-organizing this chapter with Adebayo Adelekan. I have been using IPFS for 9 months especially in my recent project https://houseafrica.io and would like to help others learn as well. Thank you for the prompt and positive response.

Hi @terichadbourne terichadbourne I am still waiting for your response to the issue #65 above. Thanks

Thanks for your interest in ProtoSchool, @chuta! We're currently working through some proposed changes to the event leadership model that would affect next steps here, so I'm afraid I need to delay my response for a little bit. I hope to be in touch in early December with an update!

@chuta Thanks so much for your patience and for your interest in sharing ProtoSchool’s content with folks in your area!

We’re currently in the process of doing some user research and redesigning the way we support local event leaders so that we can provide great educational resources to a broader number of volunteers in a more straightforward and scalable manner, including allowing multiple groups in the same city to share our content. It’s our intention to roll out some new tools and guidance in Q1 of 2020 once we’ve had a chance to do our research and get our plans in order.

We’d love your input as we make our plans. Please complete this survey if you’d like to share your thoughts!

For the time being, we’re putting a temporary hold on creating new chapters/repos so that we can focus on building the educational resources and tools that will help local leaders and learners succeed. However, we’re still excited to have you help educate folks in your area!

Between now and our announcement in Q1, I’d ask you to refrain from referring to your group as a ProtoSchool chapter, but invite you to share our content at your local events. You should feel free to label a specific event offered by your group as a ProtoSchool workshop if it meets all of these criteria:

I’m going to leave this issue open and label it as on hold for the time being to ensure that I circle back with you once our new leadership model is announced in Q1. In the meantime, feel free to email us with questions, and I hope you’ll check out our resources on organizing ProtoSchool events. We’re really excited to have you share our tutorials with your local community!

Great news for you, @chuta!

We now have a process for submitting upcoming ProtoSchool workshops to be included on our website! We expect to launch this new site feature within the next couple of weeks, so please review this issue now to learn about qualifying events and how to submit. We need event data before we can launch!

Please note that this opportunity is open to everyone. Whether you want to lead a single workshop at a conference or incorporate our curriculum into the content of a longstanding meetup, we're eager to have you share ProtoSchool's content with your local community. Be sure to check out our resources for event organizers.

I'll be in touch again later this month with more updates on the new community leadership model and an upcoming ProtoSchool newsletter. In the meantime, please feel free to email us with questions!

Hello @terichadbourne I am back to understand what is holding us back on this request. I really want to see this Chapter opened ahead of our #LagosBlockDeFi2020 conference coming up on 29-30 May in Lagos. We will like to run a workshop on decentralized web as a side event. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/blockchain-decentralized-finance-conference-exhibition-lagos-2020-tickets-91428251361 Kindly update me ASAP. Cheers.

That sounds awesome @chuta! We've been looking for upcoming events we can use to launch our new events display on our website, so this is great timing.

We'd love to add your event to our website as long as it meets these criteria:

If so, please update your event website to note the ProtoSchool workshop content and fill out the event submission form so we can get you listed on our site.

This might be a nice use case for using both the "hosted by" field (Blockchain Nigeria User Group?) and the "hosted at" field (Blockchain & Decentralized Finance Conference?) so we can link to both your group and the event where the workshop will take place. A similar example: image

Really excited to have you on board to host ProtoSchool workshops!

Hei @terichadbourne I have added the ProtoSchool Workshop to our event website as well as on the Eventbrite registration page. Please check them out. https://blockchainnigeria.group/ https://www.eventbrite.com/e/blockchain-decentralized-finance-conference-exhibition-lagos-2020-tickets-91428251361 If it is ok, kindly add to your website and let me know so we can formally announce it to our community. hackipfs

I will also appreciate it if our Lagos, Chapter request can be accelerated at this time. We have a very exciting community of 1,300 developers and enthusiasts of Decentralized web, finance file systems etc, on our Telegram Group. Take a look: https://t.me/joinchat/E9zeck-1cBlpcho32nb8-g

Hi there, @chuta!

We launched our events page today and your workshop is the first to be posted! 🎉

Just reaching out to ensure you've seen the official announcement on our new event-based community model for ProtoSchool, which replaces our chapter-based model. With the implementation of this new system, you'll no longer need a chapter to host ProtoSchool workshops, so I'll close out this issue.

Under the new event-based model, hosting ProtoSchool workshops is easier than ever. Please check out our readme for all the details you need to get started. (Safety comes first, of course, so please refer to guidance from your local health authorities around COVID-19 before scheduling any gatherings.)

I'd also like to invite you subscribe to our newsletter so we can keep you informed of news and resources for local organizers. (Be sure to check the Local Leadership Updates box.)

Looking forward to working with you as you host local events in your community. Thanks again for volunteering!
