There are multiple issues with anvils, but I believe they are separate, so I'm filing separate bug reports for them. This one is the worst since it kicks out the client with an obscure error message (the initial part of an exception).
To reproduce:
1) Go to an anvil
2) Put a weapon in the first slot
3) Put an enchanted book in the second slot
4) Press the resulting enchanted weapon slot.
5) crash!
Strangely enough, this seem to happen only with weapons (but with all weapons I could think of to try with). Enchanting armor works like a charm (pun intended! :-)). So is also combining two enchanted books into one.
