Error Connecting to VPN #129

Closed 6lackHeart closed 6 years ago

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I'm using the free trial of protonvpn, I have installed openresolv, and everything is up to date. Using Ubuntu 16, and on a wireless connection. I followed the setup guide on proton's website, and everything functions, but I cannot connect to the VPN sadly. This is the error I get:

~$ sudo PROTONVPN_CLI_LOG=true ./protonvpn-cli.sh -f Fetching ProtonVPN servers... [] CLI logging mode enabled. [] Logs path: /home/b/.protonvpn-cli/connection_logs Connecting... [!] Error connecting to VPN.

Here is my log file:

It keeps getting a fatal error, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why I can't connect to the VPN?

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

It's there, but for whatever reason it's not working. /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf is meant to update /etc/resolv.conf.

Well, you can make a backup of your /etc/resolv.conf file and after that replace the contents of /etc/resolv.confwith this:

# ProtonVPN DNS - protonvpn-cli
nameserver 10.8.8.1

So you try to connect manually to OpenVPN and see what happens. If it still not work you can restore /etc/resolv.conf to its previous state. I don't have a clue if it can change anything but I would try this. haha

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

It wouldn't complete the initialization sequence. I'm gonna restore it back to how it was.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

It wouldn't complete the initialization sequence.

So you can try to connect and after that change /etc/resolv.conf to:

# ProtonVPN DNS - protonvpn-cli
nameserver 10.8.8.1

If it doesn't work you can restore it back.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

This is the output when I edit the /etc/resolv.conf with # ProtonVPN DNS - protonvpn-cli nameserver 10.8.8.1

Have you edited it before or after connecting to OpenVPN?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I think your fix made it work @xilopaint the initialization sequence was completed and I can surf the net, and I checked ipleak and it says I'm in the state of Virginia which I'm not. Are there other ways to test how its working besides ipleak? I mean I think its working, I just wanted to make sure.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I edited etc/resolv.confafter I was connected like you suggested, and it worked.

I disconnected it, and had to redo the etc/resolv.conf fix. I guess that is just something I'll have to remember to do to get it to work.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

If ipleak shows a ProtonVPN IP instead of yours you can be sure it's successfully connected to the ProtonVPN server. The output of dig also looks fine. It shows the ProtonVPN DNS.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Well it took some doing, but I can't thank you enough for sticking with me through it, and helping me out. I appreciate it a lot. Thank you @xilopaint

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

I disconnected it, and had to redo the etc/resolv.conf fix. I guess that is just something I'll have to remember to do to get it to work.

It's the root cause of the problem. Changing /etc/resolv.conf shouldn't be necessary because /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf is meant to take care of this automatically. For whatever reason DNS management is not working for you.

You can try to rename your /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf file to /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf.bkp and run protonvpn-cli. The tool will detect the file is lacking and prompt you to download it. Maybe the new version of /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf can solve the problem. It's just a bet.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Hey @6lackHeart, do you want to try solving the issue with your DNS management or are you fine with the workaround?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

@xilopaint sorry for the late reply. I'm fine with the work around, but if you think we can fix it then, I would be game to try and figure it out. Should I try to rename my /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf to a backup file format?

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Should I try to rename my /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf to a backup file format?

Before doing it, could you check the version of your openvpn package with openvpn --version?

Your openvpn package is outdated. To upgrade all packages in your machine, including openvpn, use:

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

When it has finished, you can check the version again with openvpn --version.

That's usually how I upgrade my system. I'll try it again right now, but I have a feeling it may be the same. I have my system set up to use a update mirror from my local university. Could that be causing the issue?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Here is the output for openvpn --version after I used sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

What's your output for which resolvconf?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

My output for which resolvconf

/sbin/resolvconf

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

I have my system set up to use a update mirror from my local university. Could that be causing the issue?

Could you try to use any official mirror for Ubuntu?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I changed the mirror, and it says its all up to date, but the version is the same. What is the most up to date version of openvpn?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I'm seeing other people were having trouble updating openvpn with Ubuntu 16

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

What's your output for echo $PATH?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

This is my output for echo $PATH

/home/b/bin:/home/b/.local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:/snap/bin

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

What's the output for ps ax | grep dns?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Output for ps ax | grep dns

1782 ? S 0:14 /usr/sbin/dnsmasq --no-resolv --keep-in-foreground --no-hosts --bind-interfaces --pid-file=/var/run/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.pid --listen-address=127.0.1.1 --cache-size=0 --conf-file=/dev/null --proxy-dnssec --enable-dbus=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.dnsmasq --conf-dir=/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d 3872 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-dnssd --spawner :1.3 /org/gtk/gvfs/exec_spaw/5

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

It seems you have a DNS resolver (dnsmask) that might be causing the issue. Let's try to stop it and see what happens.

If you are connected to OpenVPN now, disconnect it and get back to your normal connection, restoring /etc/resolv.conf to its normal state.

After that, stop dnsmask by entering sudo systemctl stop dnsmasq.service and try to connect and disconnect to OpenVPN to check if DNS management is working.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Output for sudo systemctl stop dnsmasq.service

Failed to stop dnsmasq.service: Unit dnsmasq.service not loaded.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Try sudo killall dnsmasq, restore /etc/resolv.conf and connect and disconnect to OpenVPN. If it works we can disable dnsmask later.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Try connecting the regular way sudo pvpn --connect or manually?

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Try to connect and disconnect manually to OpenVPN, not protonvpn-cli.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I tried both. sudo pvpn --connect output was "error connecting to VPN" and connecting manually completed the initilization sequence, but I can't connect to the web, and I get "server not found"

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Can you check if your network connection is set to something like "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only"?

Also, tell me if your output of cat /etc/resolv.conf still shows nameserver 127.0.0.1.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

It says I have DHCP enabled for IPv4 and IPv6. I don't see anything about automatic DHCP. I do see reserved DHCP addresses. When I run cat /etc/resolv.conf it still shows 127.0.01. Do you want me to check that when I'm trying to connect or connected with the work around?

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Ok, so let's try disabling dnsmask. At first, check if you have a /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf file. If so, follow these steps:

1) sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf 2) Comment out the dns=dnsmasq line by putting a hash # in front it. 3) sudo service network-manager restart

After that, try connecting and disconnecting manually to OpenVPN and see what happens.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

When I run cat /etc/resolv.conf it still shows 127.0.01. Do you want me to check that when I'm trying to connect or connected with the work around?

I asked you to try that connected with your regular connection.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Okay I commented out dns=masq and got the network manager to restart.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Do you still have nameserver 127.0.0.1 on cat /etc/resolv.conf or it already changed to your actual DNS?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Now when I run cat /etc/resolv.conf I get these as the output

Generated by resolvconf search **.rr.com nameserver nameserver nameserver

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Ok, you can hide the address for your privacy. Now try to connect and disconnect manually to OpenVPN and see if it works.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I'm sorry disregard that last comment. I forgot that it does that sometimes when I connect manually, and I just have to try it again to get a completed ininitiation sequence. Its working, but its not working. When I go to Ipleak I can still see my ip location and everything, but I am connected to openvpn.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

What's the output for cat /etc/resolv.conf while connected manually?

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Okay I commented out dns=masq and got the network manager to restart.

Is this a typo? The correct line is dns=dnsmasq.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

I apologize, I was multitasking, but I'm not anymore. It was a typo.

I am connected manually, and the output for cat /etc/resolv.conf

Generated by resolvconf search **.rr.com nameserver 10.8.8.1 nameserver nameserver nameserver

same as before, but the proton dns is added to the top of the stack.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

We are pretty close. Does ProtonVPN DNS disappear after you disconnect from OpenVPN?

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

It does, but something is wrong with my computers connection now. I'm on my phone so I can make this comment.

xilopaint commented 6 years ago

Please, disconnect from OpenVPN, restart your machine and try to connect again. Tell me if it works.

6lackHeart commented 6 years ago

Okay its working now, sorry that was weird.

Before I lost connection, the cat /etc/resolv.conf output was back to nameserver 127.0.0.1
