This is great, Jess! I really like the overall feel. How easy will it be to change some of the colors for the final version (not loving the purple... will have a better idea soon of what color might be preferable). Also, a couple of really minor details:

Can you add a line from 'society for vector ecology meeting' to FL (st augustine)? That was the 2012 location. @jenniesuz and I attended.
Would it be possible to place the ends of the lines closer to the actual locations for MMED clinic, Jake's field work, STDIO, and the EcoHealth meeting in Kunming?

Hi Julie. Thank you for comments and these can all be easily accomplished. I will wait for further suggestions before putting together another draft.

I've added a few base maps with additional color options.

Thanks for these. My current favorite is 'sand' - because it's fairly neutral but has good contrast.
