Documentation tidy up: base class #260

I reviewed the docstrings in base class again, and fixed all major issues. Please accept it in entirety. We neeed to make documentation better. Ping @lurch

Included closed issue #230 and previous patch #231, swiitched to dedicated branch.

While I appreciate the effort, not all of these docstring changes are correct and it would take longer to go through them that it would for me to make a pass at the documentation.
