I tried this https://github.com/PyORBIT-Collaboration/PyORBIT3/commit/1a623ab21ecfa44de9ce603c50459511ceff5345 on CentOS and macOS and it seems to work fine. Maybe you are looking for a way to configure whether to build with or without mpi support?
