I'm listed a few GIS and land-use data related task list ordered in priority. These are all tasks that would involve editing the build_renewable_profiles script:
[ ] 1. Review GIS Coordinate System alignment for all GIS layers brought into build_renewable_profiles
[ ] 2. Integrate the USGS PAD-US dataset for protected areas. This would be integrated to replace the protected planet dataset which has global coverage but I believe doesn't include all land-use exclusions necessary.
[ ] 3. Integrate Department of Defense land-use exclusion data. This might be included in the PAD (?), but surly there is a dataset of DOD land which can't be developed.
[ ] 4. Integrate the National Land Cover Database for land-use dataset instead of the currently used copornicus. This would involve (1) downloading this data as a raster image through an existing or new retrieve snakemake rule, (2) swapping in this raster for the copornicus data, (3) updating the configuration files to reflect the proper raster codes from NLCD.
[ ] 5. Gather and integrate other state/regional land-use screens! The state of California has an amazing land-use screen for wind and solar. I imagine other states also have similar datasets available!
[ ] 6. #211 Add Land-slope exclusions for new solar and onshore wind builds for mountainous terrain.
