Following a series of improved recon IJ-22M Oraos which were scheduled to be produced by the aircraft manufacturer Soko Mostar in 1992, another series of more advanced strike aircraft was on the schedule. While the IJ-22Ms were planned to completely replace the aging IJ-21 Jastreb within recon squadrons, the J-22M was supposed to replace the remaining J-21 Jastrebs within strike squadrons of the Yugoslav Airforce. This would have taken place approximately in the 1992-1994 timeframe.

This modernisation adds:

This camera would be fixed in place (no gimbal) in the same way as it can be seen on the modernised version of the Serbian Air Force. There are sketches from 1988 which have a similar nose section as the current modernised version. The other option would have been a targeting pod with flir and laser designator. The problem is that there are no sources to suggest which flir pod or laser guided bombs would have been integrated. Either way, integrating an IR camera in the nose section would have been a much less complicated and much quicker process than a targeting pod. I think it's plausible to assume that a modified nose section with sensors would have been preferred.

Btw: A recently released document indicates that in 1982, Israel almost sold EL/M-2021 radars to Yugoslavia and Romania for the J-22/IAR-93. Unfortunately it never happened because the radar contains US made electronics and Romania was an Eastern-Bloc state (unbelievable to see it with such modern equipment, knowing how the J-22/IAR-93 turned out in "our timeline"): https://www.rumaniamilitary.ro/se-cauta-radar-pentru-iar-93

The one planned by JRV at the end of the 80s of the last century (the first in a series) meant improving maneuverability, improving the attack navigation system (including INS, HDD, FLIR...), increasing the load capacity of the hardpoints, adding rails for air to air (R-60M) missiles on the wingtips, the integration of the D and E versions of the Maverick and laser-guided air bombs. It was also necessary to create a modernized scout that should have afterburner engines, cannons and all other weapons plus modern scouting equipment.

Has the procurement of some air to surface missiles been considered? Say the Penguin or Kormoran missile?

As far as I know, there used to be talk of Penguin missiles for Eagle (*Orao) planes. Maybe they would put RBS 15 on planes too.

There was also talk of procuring Penguin for the PC. type 171 - Mirna, that's what they told me in Škorpik (*Naval Base) back in 1985.

The truth is, the purchase of Israeli-made (*Norwegian) Pinguin rockets was considered, and there was a lot of progress in that.

(RBS-15 missiles are too heavy for all hardpoints except one centerline hardpoint of the Orao. This could be the reason why they went for Penguins)

I just read on the aviation forum about the purchase of Penguin missiles for Eagles (Oraos), so I remembered that I heard a long time ago that Mirna should have had the possibility of installing Penguin missiles in their basic version of surface to surface. I think that the FCS for Penguin is neither complex nor large in size, so it had a place to be located, although I don't remember the schedule on Mirna the best. I also heard that the installation of Soviet or Swedish-made anti-submarine torpedoes was considered, most likely 2 devices. This is especially having in mind Simrad's sonar.

OK, we have managed with the data about the plane, the question remains about the possible purchase (about 15 pieces) of Rb12 Penguin (which means Penguin) of these Norwegian missiles for JRV. And since this rocket could also be fired from a helicopter, it might have been considered to equip a helicopter with them.

There were plans to buy Penguins. This rocket has good properties in closed seas such as the Baltic, the Adriatic, is quite light and has several times greater range than Maverick.

The FAB-575 and AM-500 were still tested in 1991. Only in service for these two hypothetical Oraos.
