Open TempestII opened 1 year ago
During Harrier development the P.1127 was type-classified as Kestrel FGA.1 and used in quasi-operational service in the Tripartite Evaluation Squadron. As a result I find it very unlikely that the name Kestrel would be reused for this... unique aircraft. Peregrine is excellent though, a very fast British-native raptor that fits right into the naming scheme.
That being said, I still can't believe this thing would fly properly, never mind get into service.
Thinking further on this, the FGR aircraft should be fitted with a reconnaissance pod, the R standing for reconnaissance. The Vicon pod from the late Jaguars should be suitable, or any other pod will do.

Comments
The P.1216 was intended to meet Royal Air Force and Royal Navy requirements for an ASTOVL aircraft, as well as a possible sale to the United States Marine Corps. While Kestrel was touted as one name for it, Peregrine and Vulture have also been suggested. There is also a version with forward-swept wings known as the P.1214.
