Most of the changes are lifted from https://github.com/QCoDeS/Qcodes_loop/pull/93 but redone to avoid unrelated formatting changes

@rsokolewicz I had another look and I think it makes the most sense to just merge these changes in

thanks! much appreciated. I see that the doc pipeline is failing. I think pinning sphinx<8.0 would solve the issue. status_iterator was removed in 8.0 according to here: https://www.sphinx-doc.org/en/master/extdev/deprecated.html

@rsokolewicz seems likely. The docs are not building with the latest version of nbsphinx due to another bug ;( upgrading that would probably resolve it
