My ongoing list of functionality that we want to support:

Data transformations:

reprojection
subsetting
file-level metadata edits (e.g., assignment of projection, gdal_edit operations)
Raster math (e.g., gdal_calc.py)
Compression (e.g., apply DEFALTE compression to geotiff)
Build overviews (gdaladdo)
Tiling
mosaicing

Service-y stuff:

User submitted recipes that result in downloadable data file(s) archived as a new DataONE dataset
Creation of 3D tiles for geospatial datasets to enable fast viz in portal cesium app
