During tests of MCP2517 with Rpi, I noticed that CAN controller heats up. Not significantly though, but makes a small smell (I used 5V power).
I found 2 schematics which uses 3.3V for powering MCP2517FD. Even that datasheet claims that chip can handle up to 5.5V, it will be wise to create a 3.3 V point with either a Linear Reg or a very good resistor and 100nF capacitor for smoothing.
The image below is one of them. I will research some Lin Regs later. @liamkinne what's your opinion? It definitely may prolong the life of those controllers.
