This is very much likely a graphics driver issue. Can you post the following information?
qubes-hcl-report <vm-name>
and copy the report file in the VM)sudo dmesg
or sudo journalctl -k
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
and /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log
(the latter requires root privileges to access)xrandr
and xrandr --listproviders
outputglxinfo
output/var/log/qubes/guid.<vm-name>.log
, just in caseYou may want to make sure any possible sensitive or private information are censored in the logs and/or outputs.
Also, I suggest launching glxgears
immediately after dom0 login, and watching what happens on its window as the symptom appears.
I'd like to echo this new issue, on a machine that's been working with qubes for a number of years. For me, it occurs on i3, but not in XFCE. The symptoms take a couple seconds to appear. Here's some of the above info -- scanning the rest for sanitizing need first.

This last error line only pops up after the issue starts happening.
It sounds like #5460 with worse symptoms (bit rot in wedged path?).

works to mask the refresh issue in i3, but all my i3bar icons, like disk, audio, networking, etc. disappear.
@BehindTheBrain Can you reconfigure i3 and bring them back? Then, it's just because i3 binds the widgets to a specific screen name which changes (e.g. HDMI1 to HDMI-1) when you switch the driver.

@iamahuman I have followed the advice in https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/5460#issuecomment-553868271. Thanks for pointing this! It has solved the problem for me. Even on previous version of the kernel (4.19), gears in glxgears were not moving, but given that I mostly work with text I did not notice a problem with graphics cards earlier. Would the report (logs, hardware spec) still be of any use for further digging into the issue, or setting glamor
is consider the final fix?
I believe both #5460 and #6356 would be reproducible across all hardware platforms with an Intel integrated graphics card. The logs I have mentioned earlier are unlikely to be useful in diagnosing these issues. dmesg
and Xorg.0.log
might become slightly more informative with drm.debug
and intel xorg driver debugging enabled, through.
modesetting
(+ glamor
) should be an acceptable workaround for now. For what it's worth, intel xorg driver has shipped a fix for this. For more information as to why the acceleration failure occurs, see #5909 and https://www.mail-archive.com/qubes-users@googlegroups.com/msg36072.html.
Is it a good idea to switch to modesetting for all the IGD models? If so, that should be easily possible with OutputClass
section in xorg.conf. If only selected, then not so easy, as OutputClass
doesn't give such precise control.
An alternative would be packaging newer snapshot of intel xorg driver, which already contains a fix for #5460, but not sure if other problems are related or not.
Packaging a newer driver version is probably the best fixed, IMO.
I've uploaded update xorg-x11-drv-intel package to current-testing repo for both R4.0 and R4.1. You can find instructions how to use it here.
Glad I found this issue as I have the same behavior on a machine that’s run Qubes for years. As I see action has been taken I’ll follow the links. Is it worth adding system details or would that be noise at this point?

For me this started to happen in January and only happens when I have connected or disconnected an external monitor and the problem is only with the laptop screen. For instance when having mirroring of the screens I can see all changes on the external monitor but the laptop screen is frozen until mouse is moved there.
I can usually also get it back to work by connecting and disconnecting the external monitor up to a few times.

and removed custom settings for Intel. It's working good now. Thank you!
I suspect same flavor of this may be re-arising now, but with much worse severity. After removing the temporary fix, and getting recent updates, I'm now experiencing a more more intermittent total freeze of the graphics, mouse, keyboard, but not of apparent background functionality. For example, while the screen, mouse, and keyboard all freeze, I can continue an audio call or music streaming indefinitely, and code executions finish in the background. It seems to just be a graphics failure. The screen freezes as it was, and sometimes the mouse still moves, though can't interact, and sometimes the mouse freezes. Given that I saw no obvious way to recover, this required a hard-shutdown, so demonstrating the logs/reports as previously done above was not practical.

Always. In XFCE you need to give it a bit more time until the problem appears (open some apps in VMs, used them for a while). In awesome wm or i3 wm just follow steps below.

The problem started happening after 2020-01-18 upgrade. The following packages were upgraded in dom0:
Qubes OS was restarted before the above upgrade and there was no issue. After the above upgrade, Qubes was restarted and the issue appeared.
